Idk if it's my neurodivergence speaking, but I've always felt a pretty strong disconnect b/w what scientists claim is Science vs. what we actually do, and that this disconnect is tangible in almost all scientist/laypeople interactions. This feels to be one of those cases!
And if we (scientists) recognise the difference, why do we keep espousing the fantasy that "peer reviewed = true" to non-scientists? Protection of our epistemic mode of production? Social group defense? Probably these, and much more...
This is an interesting thought: if this is the case, then scientists themselves seem to use the label "peer reviewed" incorrectly ("validated" as opposed to "able to be validated"). Anecdotally, this fits my xp of how scientists regard published research (potentially, but not certainly, true)

Whether subsumed by this or another category, I think there are also the soc.scientists that just learnt "positivism = bad" and are not actually interested in changing that opinion. Like, disinterestedness, "no skin in the game", akin to the "job as any other" scientist 🤷
