Excited to find the tiny western oceanic liverwort Colura calyptrifolia new to East Lothian (SE Scotland) today. Two small tufts of it in a damp area of woodland: one on a Downy Birch (Betula pubescens) trunk and the other on a fallen Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii).

Although we have rarely failed to come across Black Grouse at one of our favourite sites to the north of Lairg, rarely do they show this well. Taken yesterday afternoon in dull conditions, but bright enough to show the sheen. #birdingscotland #highlandbirds @emilyrichens.bsky.social

Agree with all of this - cost is the big issue. Few people have the spare money to install a heat pump even if they pay for themselves in a few years. Same with solar panels where there is no Govt support. We have had both installed and are delighted with the results too.

I'm delighted with my heat pump.

But my experience getting it installed taught me what’s been stopping many more people from getting one (so far).

A lovely interruption from writing about orchids - pre-publication copies of my new book for children have arrived.

Writing this meant a lot to me. As a kid I was desperate for books full of interesting facts and cool stuff about butterflies. If this book finds a kid like me, I hope they love it.
