A Golden Plover stands alert among the reddish-brown heather and grasses of upland peatland. Its mottled gold and black plumage blends with the landscape, a reminder that these precious habitats are home to rare and remarkable wildlife.
GOOD NEWS: the peat burning ban is being extended in the English uplands. π
Peatlands lock up carbon, protect water & support rare wildlife.
We hope today's announcement signals a move to end this damaging practice for good, and thank our supporters for helping make it happen.

Welcome Emma Reynolds MP to your new role as Environment Secretary.
The choices ahead on nature, farming and development will be critical, and the right ones can deliver lasting benefits for people and nature.
We look forward to working with you.
Picture of a Hen Harrier mid flight
Thanks to brilliant conservation efforts with our partners it has been a record year for Hen Harriers in the Forest of Bowland, with one of the highest number of fledglings recorded in over 40 years! Read all about it here: www.rspb.org.uk/england/engl...
A healthy Greenfinch perched on a lichen-covered branch against a soft green background. Birds with trichomonosis may instead appear fluffed up, lethargic, and reluctant to fly, often sitting still for long periods.
Garden birds not looking well? It could be trichomonosis.
By reporting sick or dead birds, you can directly help our scientists understand this disease.

A Water Rail nestled among reeds it's red bill, grey face and body and brown and black barring in full splendour.
Water Rails are related to Moorhens but a lot smaller and slimmer. Although distinctive with their long red bill and grey face, youβll be lucky to catch a glimpse of these shy wetland birds, but youβll not mistake their call β they sound just like a squealing piglet!

π£ βA sticking plaster on a gaping woundβ
The Seabird Action Plan was meant to be a moment of hope for Scotlandβs magnificent seabirds.
But it comes just days after the approval of Berwick Bank windfarm, which is set to kill tens of thousands of seabirds near some of our most iconic colonies.
A bright August full moon dominates the centre of the image against a dark night sky. The moonβs surface is detailed with various craters and dark patches, giving it a textured, three-dimensional appearance. The stark contrast between the illuminated moon and the dark clouds surrounding it creates a sense of calm and quiet solitude.
A dark night sky scattered with countless stars, with two bright meteor trails cutting through one vertical near the centre and another slanting in from the right edge. The horizon is lined with the silhouettes of trees and distant hills, faintly lit by a warm orange glow from below.
Augustβs full moon rises ππ
Named the 'Sturgeon Moonβ by Native Americans for plentiful fishing, & the 'Grain Moon' in Old English to mark the harvest.
Tonight, it shares the sky with the Perseid meteor shower (peaking 12 Aug), so keep an eye out for shooting stars!
Moonrise: 21:16*
βThis is a very dark day for seabirds. Berwick Bank would be catastrophic for Scotlandβs globally important seabirds which are already facing alarming declines. Its impacts are so damaging it will make it very difficult for other, less-harmful windfarms to come forward. We are incredibly concerned that Scottish Government have granted consent for a project which could catapult some of Scotlandβs most-loved seabird species towards extinction.β

A dark day for Scotlandβs seabirds.
We're incredibly concerned that Scottish Government have granted consent for the Berwick Bank offshore windfarm, which could catapult some of our most vulnerable species toward extinction π¨
We will carefully scrutinise the details and consider our next steps.
We are taking steps to help our wetlands become more resilient and adaptable to climate change. This will enable them to continue to support a wide range of species throughout changing weather systems.
