Found this Robber Fly perched along the path on a cold morning. These formidable ambush hunters are among our largest flies, often waiting motionless on leaf tips or sunlit perches—watching, ready to strike. When an insect ventures too close, the robber fly reacts instantly, spearing its prey with sharp, beak-like mouthparts. It injects a potent mix of nerve toxins and enzymes, liquefying the victim from the inside before consuming it. Notable is the bristly “beard” on its face—a feature all robber flies share. This tuft of hairs shields their eyes from struggling prey as they feed. A precise and efficient predator, built for the hunt.
