I remember fuel rationing in Oz when I was a kid during Iran-Iraq war. We didn’t send missiles over to help back then… Was it odds/evens on alternate days to fill up? My menno brain is patchy from those times. Just remember war footage on the news every night.

PhDs are ‘hobbies’ for rich people now.

It leaves folks who spent extra years on study, not paying into pensions or NI (and who may have spend years overseas) in very precarious situations. They used to pay a premium so we could ‘catch up’ lose lost years. Now? It’s the same take home as when I was a post doc in 2010.

I knew a woman with a PhD who could pay for lodging and a nanny on a UK post doc salary in the 1980’s when she was over from Spain to work at UEA for 3 years. She commiserated with pregnant me in 2007, that then erosion in T&Cs for PhD STEMM grads meant I wouldn’t get the same abilities. Worse now.

I’m basically going to troll them. They were in a shopping list of UK universities I called out on LinkedIn for trying to wriggle off the hook of the scheme (for that one application they failed to short list). But they could try and find me a 0.4 FTE Grade 9 role? Let’s see if they bite.

I’ve asked for ‘step free access to interview room’ as my interview accommodation. Oh, and I stuck in the link to the newspaper report on me getting in the Epstein Files for the right reason, as an eg of my ‘commitment to DEI’ 🤣 They wanted ‘innovative’!

It was written for newly finished PhDs. They know most of those these days are Neurodivergent in STEMM.
