Oh god right
What really makes me think these are ops is that they recur heavily (and did so on Twitter as well, when I was there), whereas the feral hogs, etc., were beautiful one-offs
Nice specs
*puts my computer in a circle of salt*
AIR CONDITIONING, thank you, I was trying to think of the other really outstanding one and I could not!
I think I missed Holden Caulfield Day on here and you know what? That's fine
Like leg-washing, I just assume this one is an op now
I'm curious as to whether anyone's applying harm reduction principles and methods to gambling, and, if so, which ones and how it's going
Very very glad you're here and that we get to be here at the same time. Hope the year brings you some good moments even in the midst of its meanness
"The project of saying, out loud, that the world is not tenable for you, but could be, is brave, I think, because so often what makes the world more tenable for people can seem so far beyond our immediate control." - Hanif Abdurraqib
Double endorsing Cat Laine (@paintedfoot.bsky.social) who also did my author headshot & did it so well that I actually like a photo of myself! And was a professional and gracious pleasure to work with! Phil has Painted Foot's link downthread.
Food stamp recipients, laid-off autoworkers, ICU nurses don't want war with Iran. I talked to workers who are horrified by the US-Israeli bombing of schools, hospitals, homesβand outraged that we're spending billions of public dollars on war while people in the US go hungry.
Oh I'm so glad <3 I love that essay and it helps me remember not to push sorrow away
Also I just realized, idk where the OP is based, the "our country" bit might not be appropriate
I am thinking
because on the one hand, totally, gotta pick your zone of activity
AND on the other OTHER hand, I think my imagined conversational gambit might be a necessary precursor to that moment? Like, you have already had lots of these conversations with people about lots of things!
I think my point is: Don't assume that people don't care bc they're not saying anything. If *you* care and *you're* not saying anything, how would they know? Offer them the chance to care with you! If they turn you down, you're where you were before--but if they accept your offer, you have company.
Shoutout to Ross Gay, who raises this point a lot more powerfully in his essay "Joy Is Such a Human Madness..." and also to my mom, who discarded her last fuck years ago & will bring up her climate anxieties in the post office line in response to a stranger's "nice weather" comment
Worst case: They're a jerk about it, but at least you've told the truth
Medium case: They're kind of taken aback but they also go away & think about it (& you've told the truth)
Decent case: They also have been feeling alone & dissonant & will be glad that you've said it, & then you can talk more
This dissonance is dismaying & unpleasant, AND one thing I've learned from talking w/people abt climate stuff is that you can sometimes dispel it by saying to someone who *apparently* doesn't care, "I'm pretty fucking shaken up by the fact that our country just started another war for fun & profit"
i made a beanie! it's embroidered! all the profits will go to powderhorn neighbors rent fund!
Ooooh yes I bet it would
My nonfiction students do power maps as a prewriting tool! We do a sample one together for one of the readings, then they each do one for their topic. I offer both writing & organizing framings: it's great for figuring out who you need to interview, for ex, as well as everything you mentioned above
Power Mapping is a truly critical first step to organizing campaigns, and getting good at doing it is a cheat code to at least getting an effective start addressing an issue
I follow the news around local data center resistance fairly closely. This one stands out.
"Shit and goddamn, I have to get organized." - Lynda Barry
Maybe it's Louis!!! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tru...
It would be a shame to not fully immerse yourself in the deliciousness of the mac and cheese though
You have been to many meetings, and to many meetings you will go again
THREE LOUD CHEERS
What if you wanted to eat some mac and cheese every now and then
Literally EVERY community service could benefit from personnel redundancy
I am kind of aggravated by this
