To argue a ceasefire violation (which Israel has been repeatedly guilty of) justifies the current slaughter of Palestinians is hypocritical; similarly, denying that Palestinians face violence at the hands of the Israeli state even when a "ceasefire" is in place ignores reality.

Even when ceasefires are in place, the Palestinian people are and have been subject to a brutal campaign of occupation by Israel. Palestinians civilians and children were already being killed by Israel in record, disproportionate numbers prior to the events of Oct 7.
Furthermore, 2022 is far from the only example of Israel breaking a ceasefire. Consider the article below, written in 2012, which outlines numerous examples of this occurring in 1949, 1956, 1967, 1973, 1981, 1982, 1988, 2001, 2002, 2008, 2011, and 2012.

These struggles are linked and not isolated from one another. The most recent ceasefire arose after the Israelis unleashed a series of "preemptive" airstrikes in Gaza after making an arrest in the West Bank.

Indeed, it should come as no surprise that children are frequent victims of violence from Israeli forces, given that children account for nearly half of the Palestinian population. 41% of Palestinians in the West Bank, and 47% in Gaza, are under 18.

This exceeds the numbers reported in November 2022 from Save the Children, who noted at the time that 2022 had been the deadliest year for Palestinian Children in the West Bank since 2006.
Save the Children International published a report in September noting that 2023 was already the deadliest year on record for Palestinian children in the West Bank, with at least 38 Palestinian children killed by Israeli forces; an average of more than one child each week.
I've been seeing a talking point being used lately that I want to address, which goes like this: "There was already a ceasefire before Oct 7..."
This is a disingenuous statement which ignores the brutal reality of life under occupation by Israel for the Palestinian people. 🧵
However well-intentioned, calls for a mere ceasefire don't go far enough. The blockade on Gaza must end. The occupation of Palestinian territory must end. The conditions that led to this moment need to be addressed, else the status quo of apartheid and genocide will continue unimpeded.
