#protest & #movement are inevitable and often necessary in a #Democratic polity. However, they can not substitute the role of #public #institutions...and so I argue in this article

"Those who feel oppressed by liberal democracy can learn from Kant that rejecting civil liberties, democracy, and the rule of law leads not to greater freedom, but to arbitrary rule and oppression."

I was awestruck by its infrastructure and urban amenities β a confluence of modern living while preserving its tradition, culture, and language. Listened to the speeches of South Korea's President, Prime Minister, and the speaker of the National Assembly.

Visited Seoul, South Korea, for the IPSA World Congress 2025. Had a fantastic experience visiting its several iconic buildings and cultural landmarks. Visiting the statue of Dialogue at Olympic Park was an altogether different experience.

βThe most lethal crisis isnβt just hunger or thirst β itβs the brutal collision of both. And those deaths are often not recorded; when children are severely malnourished, theyβre eleven times more likely to die from common childhood illnesses.β

In Praise of Floods by James C. Scott (Yale) Nonfiction This provocative study of rivers by the esteemed political scientist, who died in 2024, offers a posthumous conclusion to a scholarly career of upending conventional wisdom. Scott argues that focussing on the human costs of flooding is anthropocentric. A flood may be, βfor humans,β the βmost damaging of βnaturalβ disasters worldwide,β but, from βa long-run hydrological perspective, it is just the river breathing deeply, as it must.β In celebrating periodic flooding, Scott is also warning about the costs of human intervention. Dams and levees lead to less frequent flooding, but erosion and deforestation mean more catastrophic floods when these barriers are breached. The more civilized you are, in other words, the less resilient you are.

For International Women's Day, I give you Lise Meitner, one of the discoverers of nuclear fission, the first to formulate and understand it. Never won the Nobel Prize despite being nominated 49 times, though she does have the element Meitnerium named after her.

Turned this thread into a piece for @goodauth.bsky.social. An astonishing moment that showed how flattery and deals can't change Trump's core beliefs, why leaders' beliefs are so sticky, and how much leaders can alter the course of international politics.
