Honestly, being toward the end of a PhD when you struggle with mental health issues that force you to take things slow kinda sucks. Funding ran out and it's hard to find work that pays enough to live on, yet doesn't make you too much so I can work on my thesis is really fucking hard. Wish me luck.
Everyone interested in #gamingthepast. Did you know that www.playthepast.org still lives, 15 years after its launch and Gilles Roy is steering the ship to provide us with new thoughts and analysis on games and history? 1/

Man, I'm trying to write a section in my thesis about taking a somewhat activist stance as a researcher and I think it's probably one of the hardest thing I ever had to write. Definitely going to piss off some positivists, but that's okay.
Question primarily for #historians: I'm basically trying to build a defense of oral history and I would need something on how seeing oral sources as less trustworthy than written ones is rooted in imperial/colonial thought. Anyone know a good source on that or that just mentions that topic?
I am often reminded of Audre Lorde when I think about this: "The Masterโs Tools Will Never Dismantle the Masterโs House."
And what of Indigenous languages? To the best of my knowledge, our language laws never take them into consideration. That says a lot. 4/4
Don't get me wrong, protecting the French language in Quebec and Canada is quintessential, but the tactics used by the Quebec government are incredibly similar to those of the colonisers of "old" and are harmful to protecting it nationally. You don't resist colonialism by employing it. 3/4
Speaking English in French schools in Quebec is policed, shunned, and punished. It's not beaten out of us physically, but is still repressed. It's similar at work (with exceptions). In the public sphere, speaking is not policed extensively, but it does happen at times, but it is in writing. 2/4
Currently at a conference in South Africa and it's so challenging, interesting, and generally mindblowing to hear African perspectives, in particular about how colonisers imposed their culture on the continent.
It's making me think on my own experiences as a bilingual person in Quebec 1/4
JP is definitely a good resource to "steal" from! But is it really stealing if he gladly shares it ๐ค
Trying to refer to people doing history outside of academia without falling into the trap of positioning academics as better than others. I use "trained historian" for academics, but amateur historian somewhat implies a lowrt rank. What do you use? Self-taught, citizen, community historian? #history

Itโs worth emphasizing that the Colombia fight was not about accepting deportations. It was that the Colombian president demanded deportees be treated humanely, and not as props for Trumpโs performative cruelty. That simple request for decency was enough for Trump to instigate a trade war.
Update: got an email saying it was a mistake and that I was not included in that deicison. They are doing wonderfully!
This is pure BS. Giving storage for student's research projects should be the bare minimum. Plus, when dealing with sensitive material, this means I can't rely on my uni/employer to provide me with a safe space for the material I use OR I USE WHILE WORKING FOR THEM. Such BS.
My uni also increased the cost of tuition by something like 8.5% this January and I'm wondering why the fuck I'm even paying tuition if I can't even do my work with what they offer. My choices are now either buying a new hard drive or figuring out a new (safe) cloud to save copies of my work.
Just got an email from my uni saying that because of new Microsoft policies, our data storage is down to 100 GN for graduate students (from the previous 1 TB) and 10 GB for undergrads. This means I can no longer use their cloud to save my interview files on OneDrive and benefit from that security.
After a well deserved break from transcribing, I'm back at it. Here's a new great automated transcription mistake I'm sure many people wil enjoy: Stardou Valley. Plus, the interview partner was talking about cozy games.
It's definitely not capitalism making ungodly amounts of profit on the back of people's suffering, it's a party game. Yeah, that's the ticket.
Be careful, if you ever played Among Us, or probably watched The Thing I guess, you might be a CEO assassin!
Like fucking clockwork lol
a movie called nosferatatouille, where a bat sits on draculas head and turns him into a world-renowned pastry chef
It started figuring out "t'sais" (tu sais =you know) and fait-que (donc = (so), but writes them as seperate words, not the comtraction we commonlybuse. But it does not understand stuff like "asteur" ("ร cette heure," which basically use like maintenant =now), which is again quite common.
