Agreed! It's been so gratifying to watch the local media ecosystem grow sustainably instead of contract
As a journalist living in Minneapolis, I'll make two plugs. 1st, the area is great & doing lots of good work in alt journalism outlets - nonprofit, worker-owned, etc - alongside the traditional places. 2nd, I work in policy/trade journalism, which has been a more stable part of the industry (so far)
There's a lot of small papers in more rural counties or in smaller towns in MN (and everywhere) that have shuttered in the past 5-10 years, but have name recognition/credibility locally. I bet it wouldn't even take much money, comparatively, to get them back up and running
Thanks!
Have you been doing your WPA updates this season? I always enjoyed (or lamented, depending on the season/team/player) watching the evolution of those
There's a quick market rally happening, but I assume it will soon start to sink in for them that he only removed the worst of the tariffs. There's still a 10% duty on nearly all imports and he *raised* it for China to 125% - and this is still in addition to the ones on cars, steel and aluminum
This is from just a couple days ago. Not as explicit as he is sometimes on this, but he clearly thinks the other countries are just handing money to the US rather than US importers paying the duties upon goods entering
I am a subscriber to both Racket and your podcast and I think it's great that the twin cities is able to support cool local stuff like this. Speaks well of us, I think!
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie once I started thinking of it as like really well-acted Gossip Girl but Catholic Church. Plus it gave us Isabella Rossellini as a nun getting to yell at a bunch of cardinals, which is real treat
I came here to post this - happy to see someone beat me to it. This important Grimes Lore should not be forgotten
Hm, to my knowledge it didn't go anywhere officially, but it's certainly a methodology they like, so it seems possible it could resurface in the next administration
The WTO this morning reappointed Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as director-general, the first woman and first African to hold the role. Largely expected, but everyone was waiting to see if the US would be a wild card ahead of a new admin that does not support her www.wto.org/english/news...
Will he? That's a different question and pretty unclear at this point. He has proposed a wide variety of tariffs for his second term and it seems likely at least some of them will come to fruition. But based on his first term, he also likes to use them as threats to force negotiations
Can Trump impose these tariffs? Yes, probably. USMCA (the new NAFTA, negotiated during his first term) has a fairly broad national security exception that the US could invoke
And, this morning, the Mexican president said her country would respond in kind, but would rather just talk through the issues (mainly migration, illegal drugs): insidetrade.com/share/181733
Last night, I was minding my own business when my editor texts me a link to Trump threatening a 25 percent tariff on Mexico and Canada. Amid vivid flashbacks to all the times during the first admin when I covered policy-by-tweet announcements, I wrote it up: insidetrade.com/share/181732
I also had this thought, mostly because of how willing the US has been to invoke the GATT national security exception at the WTO
I write for insidetrade.com, a trade policy-focused publication
A solid collection of trade types if you, like me, are into that sort of thing. I have made this starter pack into a feed, so if you're a trade person and not on here, say hi! (h/t to @samuelmarclowe.bsky.social for making the starter pack)
And don't forget to mention layers. We in the cold states love to talk about our winter layering
I 1000% second this. I have made these cookies multiple times and they are now a household (and neighborhood!) favorite. They are so, so good

Happy to help! Feel free to DM me if you want to chat more on this
I ended a ridiculously long Duolingo streak and instead committed my time to practice listening and have been very pleased with the results. My goal is two hours a day, but ymmv. A great resource (free and paid options) for this is dreamingspanish.com and r/dreamingspanish if you're on Reddit
I canβt speak to NM, but just anecdotally, the Minneapolis subreddit has seen a significant uptick in the past few months of posts from trans folks and parents with trans kids looking to move. I imagine this is on the mind of a lot of LGBTQ+ people
Thank you for this! I hope sports discourse becomes more prevalent here
so you're saying it's more like: is one born a poster or does one have poster thrust upon them?
