One thing I would say is that they are a bit more complex to get right. You either need a good installer or be prepared to learn how to set the heating curve to give you maximum efficiency and stable heat. A few bad installers will just set it to heat the water at 50 degrees leaving big bills behind

It’s a normal 16kw one but we do have underfloor heating downstairs and rads upstairs. It is a Stiebel Eltron with a back-up electric heater built in but as far as I am aware, we’ve never used it. My understanding is high temperature ones only really make a difference at very low temperatures.

Our house was built at some point in the 1620s, isn’t well insulated and where we need ventilation to allow it to breath. We’ve found our ASHP works brilliantly, keeps the house warm, is much cheaper than the LPG we used to get delivered and the low constant heat controls damp much better.

Agile Octopus prices including free electricity from 04:30 to 05:00
Might have to set an alarm for 4:30am to bask in half an hour of free electricity tomorrow morning

They should put a monkey on the £50 note and a pony on the £10 note to confuse the hell out cockneys.

We used to get LPG in a tank and it was hugely expensive at times or we’d run out of gas before it could be delivered. Now with our ASHP we never worry about that, the house has much nicer, consistent heat and it has worked out cheaper too.

I imagine should still be a bit cheaper than it has been, but yes, gas price will have an influence

Another Monday morning we wake up to energy market turbulence.
After fossil fuel prices stabilised somewhat towards end of last week they are reaching new highs and could rise further.
Renewable electricity does not as the sun & the wind don’t care much for what happens in the Strait of Hormuz.

Cor, sure would feel great right now if we were self-sufficient in renewable energy, and laughing at all the rubes reliant on global oil supplies. We'd have a bit of a swagger in our step today.

I suspect my neighbour who gets gas delivered for heating and cooking will still think I’m a weirdo for having a heat pump and an EV. Yes, our electricity prices are going up too, but that gas isn’t going to be cheap, and unlike electricity, you can’t easily generate your own gas for fuel at home.

We really need to electrify fully our economy don’t we? There are lots of reasons to ditch fossil fuels except as emergency backup-ups

The main reason UK energy prices are so high is not net zero but the fact the price of gas still sets the price of electricity. Breaking that link should be the priority.

If Reform had won Starmer would be on his knees to those voters begging for forgiveness. Greens win and it's like "Fuck off cranks"

I am reminded today of two things. First, the late great Charles Kennedy's leadership of the Lib Dems during the Blair years. In many respects, the Greens are now pursuing a similar strategy, albeit more radical: challenging Labour from the left. Gaza is the new Iraq War.

Quite an achievement for the PM to piss off everybody from those right leaning who will give Labour a chance, to centre left, to soft left to harder left and still expect people to vote Labour.

How far back in time can you understand English?
An experiment in language change
This is super interesting.
The last one I can read fluently is 1600.
I can then still read it and figure out (almost) every word, with some puzzling, but then lose it almost completely at 1200.
