A lovely interruption from writing about orchids - pre-publication copies of my new book for children have arrived.
Writing this meant a lot to me. As a kid I was desperate for books full of interesting facts and cool stuff about butterflies. If this book finds a kid like me, I hope they love it.

The towering mountains of the Canadian Rockies emerge and, briefly, nature manifests as art. Nature's endless artistic potential is all around us. It's not always easy to see, but when you do, it brings great joy.

My photo shows a ‘roaring’ hippo statuette made of Egyptian blue faience, a ceramic material made of ground quartz. The hippo is seated with head at left, and turned to front. The hippo’s original tusks (top incisors and lower canine teeth are known as tusks), are missing, so it looks as if the hippo is smiling. The blue body is decorated in black with Nile river plants such as water weed and lotus flowers. This decoration depicts the hippo’s marsh habitat as well as having layers of symbolism associated with regeneration e.g. lotus flowers open with the sun in the morning and close at night symbolising rebirth. Height 7.5 cm, length 12.5 cm. On display Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen.
A little blue hippo made by an Egyptian artisan around 4,000 years ago! 🦛 ❤️
Decorated with river plants and lotus flowers, blue faience hippos are associated with the life-giving Nile and rebirth. Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. 📷 by me

Pen and watercolour illustrations of waders/shorebirds from the Hartlepool/Teesmouth area of northeast England
A not-completely-exhaustive illustration of our winter shorebirds, but these are the species that you’re most likely to see during winter around Teesmouth (northeast England).

I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

Here are three of my pastels showing the Dixie's Retro Fashion stall on Cambridge market. This was for a long time a visual delight on the corner near Great St Mary's. These all found buyers.

Kilmartin is awe-inspiring, loved visiting it years ago.
On our new website, check out all the fabulous photos of plants & people!
In the header is a pic of @danryannature.bsky.social & daughter Ada on a #NewYearPlantHunt last year.
We also used images (like this stunning Grass-of-Parnassus) entered into our Photo Competition: bsbi.org/take-part/ac...
I never expected the reaction I’ve had to Urban Plants. So many wonderful comments from so many wonderful people. The satisfaction from knowing I’ve inspired people to look at the urban world with different eyes is indescribable and deeply rewarding #ChristmasBooks #ChristmasReading #WildlifeBooks
An orange poster with the warning “Beware! Fake Webs = Real Risks for Wildlife” written at the top in bold, accompanied by a small, friendly-looking spider hanging from a web. The text explains that fake web decorations can trap and harm birds, small mammals, and even toads. A cartoon owl and spider deliver the message, with the spider humorously saying, “This is all natural!” in front of its web, and the owl encouraging people to avoid fake webbing for a spooky yet wildlife-friendly Halloween. The overall tone is playful but highlights an important caution for Halloween decorating.
It’s spooky season, but let’s not make it scary for wildlife! 🎃👻
Fake web decorations can trap and injure our garden wildlife. Stick to sustainable, indoor decorations and let real spiders do the work outdoors!

A collage of eight wildflowers: delicate white umbels of hogweed; bright pink hollyhock blooms; white campion with star-like petals; purple spiky creeping thistle; small yellow autumn hawk-bit; clustered white yarrow heads; vivid blue green alkanet flowers; and daisy-like feverfew with yellow centres.
October…“When all the lovely wayside things
Their white-winged seeds are sowing,
And in the fields still green and fair,
Late aftermaths are growing.”
Hogweed, hollyhock, campion, creeping thistle, autumn hawk-bit, yarrow, green alkanet, feverfew found today. #WildflowerHour
Watercolour painting of shells found on the beach at Redcar, northeast England; there is a modern oyster shell on the left, showing outside and inside, though it is very sea-worn. The remainder are fossils from the lower Jurassic period (c200mya) - Cardinia bivalves, a fragment of Ammonite and Gryphaea oysters.
Shells - ancient and modern - from the beach at Redcar. The modern oyster was considerably more battered than the 200 million year old ones. Watercolour painting.

Ever since I finished Question Time, Reform have massively been on the attack.
Including a rant from Richard Tice entirely designed to distract from Reform and Russia.
Everyone should know about Nathan Gill, the bribes from Russia and the link to Reform.

Two books at the base of a Christmas tree with a teddy bear and some gingerbread men on a table.
An acceptable use of an early Christmas tree at Waterstones, Bath yesterday for the launch of Murder at Christmas by Fleur Hitchcock & Ice Dancer by Alex Cotter. It's 10+ years since I wrote a book for younger readers, but children's book people are some of the finest. Lovely evening, fab books.
Another sunflower field sketch that I missed posting from about a week ago. Just love these shapes which is why I was back today!
