The NSF was founded on May 10 (my bday!) 75 years ago to establish centralized science funding precisely so that researchers wouldn't have to have rich friends to get funding, & so that such funding couldn't be revoked haphazardly either. We need to fight for that, not for rich people's goodwill.
Complete revisionism. They just sold some stock & funded someone else's idea, & the acceptance of refugees was serendipitous timing; they didn't create it intentionally to house fleeing scientists. Private philanthropy funds a ton of science today, it's just done through rich people's "foundations".
