It isn't the choice of the centers. Musk and/or Trump ordered the NIH to pull funding.

Were you fired by President Trump? | House Committee on Science, Space and Technology The House Committee on Science, Space and Technology

The Democrats on the House Science Committee have set up a website to collect stories from fired federal employees, anonymously if desired democrats-science.house.gov/sciencefirings

The loss of that context is one of the many heartbreaks of losing Making Light.

I've been finding the feeds here incredibly useful for minimizing doomscrolling. Skip Following and go for birds or astronomy or Star Trek. I can engage with stuff that brings joy without the unrelenting immersion in the disaster that is the world today

Pratchett was deadly serious. Not about fantasy tropes, but about morality and being human. Did you read more than the first few books?

Wow, that's a blast from the past!

Parmigiano and you've got actual Alfredo rather than the American interpretation (would have said bastardization but that's unkind to bastards)

Only unlikely if you don't know the history of chocolate!

In the same boat and I find it hilarious when it's demonized. I was very sick before they figured out the problem was I wasn't making it anymore

To say nothing of the time involved! Farming is HARD WORK. There's a reason society moved away from individual subsistence farming, and "let's go back to that!" is nonsensical.

Dolly Parton.

That sounds amazing!

My knees. This whole bipedalism thing just isn't ready yet

Saying "here is why this win doesn't matter or won't last" seems a lot like a way to be bad at announcing wins. You don't say "just wait till next year" after you actually win for a change.

There's residential real estate that isn't available as "homes", though, because it's viewed as investment instead of housing, and that's part of the problem. And where do we "just build more" that doesn't contribute to car culture? I'm a fan of density and infill but that's not popular either

Glad he's okay. We had a close scrape with our previous male cat, but he did fine on special prescription food to reduce the possibility of urinary crystals for ten years after that.

The electric piano we have for our kid is infinitely better than the old wooden upright we had when I was his age, to say nothing of the shitty keyboards that were available then. The sounds are all sampled from a grand piano in a concert hall.

A pillowcase will hold a folded set of sheets and another couple of pillowcases (at least up to queen size, haven't tried larger). No more sets getting separated or mismatched, just grab the set.

Animal. (The Muppet). Totally unhinged, a terrible idea, and very funny.

I'm not sure about Granny Weatherwax. Nanny Ogg, though? She has zero interest in power.

The girls are pigs, and the boys are frogs. They're all one species with very pronounced sexual dimorphism

Saw that version on the big screen today. According to the introduction, that version was the one Disney used for the remaster.

I was wondering about Susan myself, probably because I'm in the middle of my annual read of Hogfather.

Yeah, that's a really good point. I haven't reread Thud in too long, clearly

Not Vimes. He can defeat his own demons, barely, but not that. Carrot, maybe, because he'd be so utterly convinced that even Sauron could be redeemed

That looks suspiciously like a map of population density of English speakers.

A still from the Muppet Movie. Fozzie the Bear is driving, with Kermit the Frog in the passenger seat and Gonzo in the back. The caption reads "Bear left. Right, frog"

You clearly haven't watched the right movie.

Centipedes are evil fast bastards. Millipedes are slow gentle critters. They look like roly-polies that, like Nanny Ogg spelling "banana", didn't know how to stop.
