That part struck out at me too. No current research justifies public subsidization as none of them pay back what the public put into it.
At the same time: I don’t want to lose the team. The city owns the arena so there’s incentive for them to renovate, I just don’t like teams taking cities hostage

True, but paying $260 million when there are huge budgetary holes elsewhere is tough to swallow, especially when publicly subsidized venues never pay off economically.

It should be paid through the owner & jock tax but we live in a world where teams move to cities who’ll give them their welfare

Yeah, it’s a tough spot. Losing the team would be devastating, but governments should not paying hundreds of millions (even after the jockeying tax) to subsidize wealthy owners who could pay for it themselves for little to no economic benefit should not be the norm
