Anyone who experiences street harassment in our region can now report it via the app which I hope will lead to more people reporting unacceptable behaviour.
The Mayor and I are determined to ensure everyone in our region feels safe. But we know that too often, for women and girls in particular, the streets, town and city centres don’t feel safe, and many incidents go unreported.
Street based harassment has no place in our region
This Start Safe, Stay Safe app will help the police and other agencies get better evidence of incidents that take place, ultimately enabling them to do more to tackle violence against women and girls.
“National Rural Crime Action Week is our opportunity to reiterate our commitment to tackling rural crime and showcase some of the work taking place alongside North Yorkshire Police and our partners, to tackle crime in rural areas."

To North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, and everyone that has helped tackle the fire on Langdale Moor We want to say a huge thank you to every single one of you for the incredible work you have done, and continue to do, to tackle the fire on Langdale Moor. Your hard work in keeping the fire contained and stopping it from spreading further has made a huge difference to our communities. The care you’ve taken not just for residents, but for wildlife and the moorland itself, has been noticed and valued by us all. At a time when many people were worried, you were there to protect what matters most.
We also want to recognise the way you’ve kept everyone updated. The clear and timely information you’ve shared has helped communities feel safer, make the right decisions, and stay reassured in difficult circumstances. That communication has been every bit as important as the work on the ground. It’s not just those fighting the fire in person we want to thank. Firefighters across York and North Yorkshire have stepped up to ensure the Service could continue responding to other emergencies across the region. And behind every crew on the moor there are control room staff, coordinators, and support teams working flat out to keep everything running smoothly. Your role is just as vital, and your efforts deserve the same appreciation.
We know how demanding this job is, and how much it asks of you. Incidents like this show again the incredible commitment, professionalism, and resilience of our fire and rescue service. What you’ve done over these past days has been outstanding, and we want you to know it hasn’t gone unnoticed. We also want to thank your colleagues in other fire and rescue services including Humberside, West Yorkshire, and Cleveland, who have supported efforts to tackle this fire. Employers across our region who have released their staff to undertake on-call and volunteer firefighter duties, and the farmers and land managers who have stepped up and offered support, we’re incredibly grateful for your help and support.

The centre includes rooms for both one-to-one and group sessions, where support can be delivered by professionals and partner agencies in a person-centred way. There are also kitchen facilities, laundry and bathroom facilities which have been invaluable in the region’s other women’s centre in York.
It was fantastic to join partners at the opening day last month as part of our wider mission to reduce levels of violence against women and girls in our region and deliver safe places for everyone.
There is now a Women’s Centre in Scarborough which provides tailored support and a safe space to women in both the town and surrounding coastal areas.

So it was great to join fire fighters at Harrogate Fire Station to be able to pass on my thanks and congratulations to them in person.
Communities across our region, including here in Harrogate are safer as a result of the fire inspection report which was published last week. The service has shown improvement in 8 out of 11 areas that the inspectors look at. That’s a brilliant achievement.

York Health and Arts Mela Organiser - Shamim Eimaan with York and North Yorkshire Deputy Mayor for Policing, Fire and Crime, Jo Coles.
It was a brilliant positive celebration of cultural diversity here in York & North Yorkshire on Sunday at the York Health & Arts Mela.
It was great to support the event with £2500 from the Mayor’s Community Fund.
