X by Ian Brownlie
(audio available at: https://dirigibleballoon.org/poem/X-Brownlie)

An X is handy now and then.
X marks the spot,
It stands for ten.
X seals a letter with a kiss,
Or marks a value that you miss.
X means death if drawn on eyes,
But numerals it multiplies.
X tells you that the answer’s wrong
And shows who features on a song.
X is the axis on a chart.
X on ballots can impart
The power to build or take apart
When placed there with two strokes of pen.
An X is handy now and then.

As of yesterday I am an ex of X, so to celebrate here's a poem that is Xtremely careful not to mention a once-popular social media site. I have called it, quite simply: X. And Y not?

Excerpt from 'Magic' by Amanda Dalton from her collection 'Fantastic Voyage'. It reads:

I saw him once
not an apparition
more a waking dream
at the zoo
in the house of butterflies
 and I could hardly see
his old grey jacket
for the trembling
antennae and the wings
banded orange blues
all fluttering
the disappearing man
 the man with wings
in his eyes
the remarkable
enchanted butterflies.

A treat to hear Amanda Dalton read recently from her collection 'Fantastic Voyage'. This is an excerpt from her poem 'Magic' in which she/the voice is referring to her father #poetry
