BASS 2024: Susan Shepherd, β€œBaboons” from Kenyon Review XLV.2 A few years ago, a tent city filled with people using drugs sprang up in Boston where I live, and my reporter friend was covering it. She described to me the nightmarish scenes inside the encampmen…

I enjoyed your story - esp. loved Ellie, perfect teenage vibes! Wrote about it (as I do all BASS stories) here:

Gutted by more layoffs in this industry. I once barely scraped by thanks to one of these funds after being laid off by Vox. I've donated to a few of these now and I sure wish it wasn't this way. Give if you can. gofund.me/158560c8

Just before my brilliant sister Gail Shepherd died, completely unexpectedly, she read one of my stories and told me I needed to write a book of linked stories. Tonight, two years later, I finished and sent it to an agent. She has been beside me, guiding me through. Bittersweet.

My story "Snakes" is a distinguished story in the Best American Short Stories thanks to Elizabeth McKenzie and the Chicago Quarterly Review for publishing it and the people at BASS for choosing it.

You need to do a full-on stand-up one man show of this shit my friend. I saw Eddie Izzard in NY do a two hour recitation of David Copperfield. It was amazing.
