With the current, multiple genocides occuring, I haven't been able to read. This hasn't happened in years (and ofc right before Stokercon), but there are more important things right now, and we have the responsibility to witness and to help. Strength to all of you out there, I know things are bad.

I will try to get back to the reviews and thank yous I owe shortly. My anxiety has been a beast with an upcoming surgery in two days and later a two-week trip to CA for Stokercon/personal business. Trying Seroquel (again) to control the panic/existential dread; they suffocate and leave me incapable
I considered that as well, but I still feel it's considered bad form to use "the blacks" for what I think is meant to be a sympathetic protagonist that is supposed to be portrayed here as No-Longer-Racist, going back home to FL, where there's a cult with a racist leader. That's why it was so jarring
For Splatterpunk and other #horrorlit fans, Aron Beauregard has just released a Signed Deluxe Hardcover Ed of his divisive work Playground.
I felt the story was a bit slow and felt forced in places, but I know that many enjoyed the over-the-top gore and the especially disturbing antagonist.

Ma's was a place of laughter and loudness, singing old Negro spirituals. No one ever called out how ma could hate blacks and love their culture so much at the same time. Sometimes Ma got dark. She told them about the end times, which were coming soon, she was certain. She'd expected them once before, back in 2001, the year Lane's mother walked out. Right around the time the planes hit the towers. It was a sign, Ma assured them. They hadn't happened, and that was the beginning of the end for Lane. She hadn't wanted the things Ma prophesized to come to pass. Not at all. They sounded awful... Great creatures rising from the swamp, being so bleak that to look upon them brought madness . But ma had been so confident about the world ending. If she was wrong about that, what else was she wrong about? Lane served with more Black soldiers than she could count. Her first week at basic she mouthed off to Cindy, a black private from Houston and the girl dropped her before she could retaliate.
...Lane often thought if Ma's let a few black folks into her congregation so people could get to know them, they'd all be better off. She felt so, so stupid when she realized Cindy wasn't no different than she was.
I'm pretty sure this isn't correct, is it? One doesn't use the term "the blacks" anymore, right? And isn't Black supposed to be capitalized in all these sentences, not just the one? This was published by a pretty major #horrorlit publisher in '24, so I feel like the editor should have caught this.

Most of the book is pretty smoothe, and professional, but those two pages look a mess. It's unfortunate because it's very apparent the author is saying 'racism is wrong,' but it looks like both editor and author may be ignorant to certain current standards around the topic?

Oh man, what a dream that would be. I don't think I'm reliable enough at this point in my life, though, as much as I want to be. I couldn't even remember to sign up for this next month's Night Worms despite putting it on my calendar and setting up notices. Some of this stuff goes so damned fast!!
