Remember that it’s perfectly reasonable and valid to think that a game—even one widely considered great—is actually not good. You don’t have to be deferential to its perceived greatness and say that, in spite of its greatness, it just didn’t click with you. You can just think it’s not very good.

Okay so I am at the gardens and there is nothing prohibiting folks from going into the fenced off area even outside of the posted hours. A bunch of folks are in it now. I am walking in at this moment. This is a problem of poor comms and optics rather than explicitly an access one.

I’m gonna need everyone at GDC to close the gap of seats when a talk is clearly filling up. Maybe even move up a few rows! No reason there should be 20 seats all scattered around.

GDC organizers heard the gardens were used as a meet-up place for folks who couldn’t afford tickets. And instead of doing the sensible thing and lowering the price of tickets, they did what every heartless business does: “If you’re meeting near our event and not here to buy, get the fuck out”

I also respect the hell out of this bc I hate when side content feels like “the main game but worse” and sometimes folks say “well its optional so its not even worth criticizing” when you try to dig into it

This was also done because cutting is often a painful process and bummer so they wanted to add a positive feeling to cutting. (Again i need to do this in my life)

Ghost of yotei was big on cutting to the point where they would have weekly cuts. Folks would get up and say here is what I cut this week and everyone would clap for them.

Every time I got to GDC I ask myself should I actually live in 3-6 week sprints.

Paraphrased but hearing “you can make goals but you have to decide what you’re not going to do. Cut some other things to fund the big things” is just good life advice I refuse to take.

Ghost of Yotei experimented with a diegetic map and journal but realized it “sucked.” The map would turn as you moved with the game world still visible and the journal would be similar (swapped for topic cards later).

Ghost of Yotei explored BOTW style climbing but ultimately went back to the guided white rocks because the freedom led to a finding a lot of nothing/hitting choke points which actually discouraged exploration over time.

I still have not finished Ghost but I believe my connection with it comes directly from this priority flip. I love to abandon the golden path.

So grateful for these three women. It was only this time last year we were starting up PPB and since then they’ve become such a huge piece of my life. I’m so lucky such cool, nerdy, talented, smart, funny and kind women are my friends. Happy women’s day!!! I could talk about games with y’all forever
