I was a little overwhelmed by the enthusiasm, support, love, and appreciation. To see people analysing the art and rocking their bodies to be a part of the art was fantastic.
For the poetry geeks/nerds, the choreographer worked in 3s so the poem is in triplets and the form of the notation is also in triplets. For example, most commercial choreographers dance in 8s & James Brown danced in a 5/8.
The dance can be read 5 ways. If you read Labanotation you will notice that instead of a dancer holding a hand or shoulder, sometimes the dancer is holding the womb and other parts of the anatomy to symbolise the female form.
I spent several days documenting the choreography and process in the dance studio, I studied the dancers' movements (Jessica and Nana-Yaa) and style of choreographer Bawren. The piece is an acrylic painting built with oxidised gold leaf, to symbolise the deterioration of the 'goddess figure'.
'Requiem' was commissioned dance to celebrate the opening of The Roden Centre for Creative Learning at the National Gallery. My work was funded by WRoCAH as part of my research.
