This was such a great session - thanks again for your contribution @hbowescatton.bsky.social! So interestesting to think about the ways these common issues overlap across our various areas of focus.
Participants said they would value:
- improved expectation-setting
- pain-affirming communication
- better analgesia options
Relevance for research, practice & policy: broader embedding of trauma-informed approaches to enhance training, attitudes, service organisation and practice
The survey was developed in consultation with women and people with a uterus with lived experience of procedure pain who took part in earlier focus group discussions.
The article highlights short- & longer-term impacts including enduring fear or mistrust of SRH services which deterred future care
We designed the qual survey to provide a snapshot of painful experiences across procedures and contexts of care including how they impacted women and people with a uterus at the time and in the longer term.
π’ Really pleased to see the findings from our qualitative survey of experiences of pain in SRH procedures published today in BMJ SRH with my co-authors @julieriddell.bsky.social & @marigreenfield.bsky.social

Scottish abortion law 'not fit for purpose', says expert group
This is a significant report which could pave the way for a major change in the way abortion is viewed and administered in Scotland.

A note from me on the significance of the recent move partially to decriminalise #abortion in England and Wales
Against a backdrop of rising prosecutions for βlaterβ pregnancy endings, #decrim in Northern Ireland through human rights mechanisms, and uneven commitment to decriminalisation as a whole
Thanks for having me, it was a really interesting day!

Just here feeling quietly heartbroken for Virginia Giuffre and her family, on news of her death by suicide. And quietly raging at all who get away with (men's) abuse of women and girls, and a society that doesn't care enough to stop it - but yeah, trans women in loos.

Labour's new policy - of humiliating trans people by requiring them constantly to self-identify - we believe puts the UK (again) in breach of its obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights and will seek a declaration of incompatability. goodlaw.social/0r6l
Dear @theguardian.com Please could you not refer to a pregnant person seeking abortion as 'the mother'. Thanks

With its coverage in the last few days, the Telegraph has now passed 500 articles attacking trans people since I began tracking their print edition on 16 April 2024.
508 in 371 days.

The legal definition of a woman in the UK now excludes trans people after a Supreme Court ruling defined sex as 'biological sex'
This is everything you need to know about the ruling π

If men want to rape us they do not need to βpretendβ to be women to get into our toilets or our changing rooms. They can justβ¦rape us, in those spaces or other public spaces or in our workplaces or our homes, and they can be statistically pretty certain that they will never face punishment for this.

4. Support professional development including effective guidance for health professionals Β
5. Offer pain relief as standard to reduce the burden of self-advocacyΒ
6. Record data on procedure pain to inform healthcare improvements.
#genderpaingap #procedurepain #SRHR
We also make 6 recommendations to informΒ future research & practice & support equity in healthcare provision:
1. Provide clear information on pain to enable informed decision-making and consentΒ
2. Don't downplay/ignore procedure pain
3. Prioritise diversity & inclusion in written/verbal info
β‘οΈ Negative and judgmental attitudes were as big a problem as pain itself Β
β‘οΈ Gender norms and power dynamics had a silencing effectΒ
β‘οΈ Negative perceptions of health professionals follow from painful experiences Β
β‘οΈ Self-advocacy is challenging and should not be necessary in this context
