cabinet papers
Happy new year and records to explore! This year, for the first time, Victorian Cabinet records closed under Section 10(1) of the Public Records Act have been opened. Delve into 1980s-90s history! url-shortener.me/3Y2F #Archives #History #Victoria #CabinetRecords #JohnCain #JoanKirner #1980s #1990s
When we say "no, everything hasn't been digitized," I need you to understand that we really mean is that virtually nothing has been digitized. This is because the realm of primary sources that historians use is incomprehensibly large.
The Australien Government has made an ad about the Social Media Ban for Under-16s, and it's surprisingly honest and informative.
1878 plan of Melbourne showing proposed new train station on Spencer St
Weβve got some new railway stations in Melbourne. So hereβs a map from our Rare Maps collection at the Uni of Melbourne showing plans for a new train station, on Spencer St, in 1878β¦
The ban is bad policy and it's clear not enough has been done to prepare young people and their families about what is about to happen. Where are the education packages and support that were promised? Just telling kids to log off and go touch grass is not going to cut it!

Australia's children's commissioner Anne Hollonds has seen "nothing" to address gaps in community and support left by the teen social media ban.
A year after first raising the alarm, Hollonds says we need to take a "good, hard look at the unmet needs" of vulnerable kids.

Opinion Social media As the world watches, Australia stands up for childhood Decisive regulation of social media is akin to the enfranchisement of women as a piece of revolutionary social policy reform. Peter Hartcher Political and international editor
Standing up for childhood would be ending poverty, raising income supports, making *all* healthcare free and accessible, mental health care for all, affordable and secure housing tor everyone, funding public education fully, ending discrimination, ensuring economic justiceβ¦
The Australian Government makes more money from HECS repayments than it does from the PRRT.

eSafety Commissioner website has published resources for under-16 social media ban. I donβt see any suggestions or specific support for neurodiverse kids, or kids who arenβt going to just easily swap out their carefully curated online social networks for uncontrolled IRL events
Recast this with 65 year Olds and I'm sold
Precisely. Banning young people from social media just so ill-informed boomers can get over their made-up moral panic simply ends up harming the most vulnerable, for whom social media are a critical lifeline. πππ
Haha tried to repost and replied instead :-) Fixed that now. Good luck with the launch!!
As a parent of a couple of youngsters, I can thoroughly recommend Stuartβs books - the kids love them (and so do I)! This one is bound to be awesome π€©
The launch for Lost in a Book is, appropriately, happening on Love Your Bookshop Day! 2pm at Readings Kids in Carlton on 11 October, hosted by the amazing Karys McEwen! Link in bio for tickets ππ±β¨
I wish - canβt make it this year. Hopefully next year though!
π Awesome!

Incredible facts about Barrow Island There is no public access to Barrow Island as it is listed as a Class A Nature Reserve. It is home to 24 species and subspecies found nowhere else on Earth. Barrow Island is home to Boodie Cave, which is one of Australia's oldest archaeological sites and contains evidence of humans from 46,200 to 51,100 years ago. US energy giant Chevron was permitted to build its $54 billion Greater Gorgon gas extraction project on the island.
From a story about a new species of pseudoscorpion, this sort of highlighted the management of Australia in a nutshell

As the mother of a 10yo and a 13yo, I totally agree.
The under 16s social media ban is populist bullshit which wonβt help kids, but will actively harm many. Itβll cut off their access to social groups, information, community, while leaving them with less protection against the really bad stuff

This is cool. 250yrs after William Hamilton designed a Vesuvius apparatus to illustrate the awe of Mount Vesuvius erupting, two mechatronich Masters students at UniMelb have created it, to accompany our new exhibition in the Baillieu Library: βThe Grand Tourβ
