the reason that converting a PDF into basically any other format (that isn't PDF-like) is hell is because of things inherent to PDF's design

no tool out there will reliably create good outputs, there are only shitty heuristics which work sometimes

calibre won't do shit if you're trying to handle a PDF with equations in it

as somebody who has had to deal with trying to convert textbook PDFs to ePUB, it is literal hell

i ended up just scraping the textbook's online version and building an ePUB based on that, because that was the much easier route (albeit still requiring >400 LoC)
