The Great Gatsby notably became popular because it was issued to American GIs, many of whom had an 8th grade reading level, during World War II.

The problem is, everyone I’ve spoken to in MAGAworld content creation — comms staff, influencers, whomever — knows their identity. In off-the-record conversations, people will simply tell me their name as soon as I ask the question, as they’re familiar with the memelord’s style from interactions in the disappearing MAGA group chats. (I do have to pause for a second and acknowledge that the meme zoomers have better opsec than the senior officials who did Signalgate a year ago.) But the moment I ask if they’d be willing to go on background about it — surely they aren’t Nazis, and shouldn’t they call out behavior in their own ranks? — sources immediately clam up. If I prod, they’ll shrug it off as everyone’s just having fun.

So @tinanguyen.bsky.social has spent weeks trying to identify the person at DHS who posts all the racist memes, and instead uncovered a fascinating code of silence: everyone in Trump's Washington knows who it is, but refuses to say. Gift link! -> www.theverge.com/column/89298...

Yeah I mean as I said elsewhere, there is no morally correct solution within the confines of the problem. It’s a means of analysis and (as someone else pointed out) ultimately about passive vs active participation/intervention

11.03.2026 17:37 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0

Guess thats why people trying to solve it with the most moral answer drives me to bang my head against the wall!

11.03.2026 17:28 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0

Right, the active choice to intervene and pull the lever to sacrifice someone else or leave it in the position started is the fundamental part; been a long time since classes for me lol

Yes! Although there are absolutely real choices where no matter what you do someone will be hurt and it will be your fault (unless you’re some kind of Captain Kirk I can beat kobayashi maru miracle worker)

Sorry by “cooler” I meant equip nets to scoop up the dead people’s stuff

11.03.2026 16:54 👍 4 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

I think that’s true (will read link in a bit!) I also think fellow lefties often ignore that power inevitably places ppl at this lever at some point. To me “how would I take responsibility” is rly important & the #1 way to do that is definitely committing to preventing this situation in the future

11.03.2026 16:53 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

I feel like I see liberals try to solve with a cost/benefit analysis to prove there is a “right” move. I see lefties correctly question the setup, but fail to acknowledge that you cannot run things without being at that lever at some point. Right wingers I think just want the trolley to look cooler?

11.03.2026 16:46 👍 5 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

Like assuming you’re already at the lever somehow and there’s no time left to avoid it, the point is you’re walking away with blood on your hands! There’s no morally absolving solution. It’s just bad and you have to deal with the consequences. A real thing that does in fact happen in life!

11.03.2026 16:34 👍 8 🔁 0 💬 2 📌 0

Maybe I’ve read it wrong but I always thought the point was to show a situation with no right move & anyone saying “I found the right move!” is just listing who they are cool with killing. “Why are we even doing this” is the only remotely decent answer & still only solves the issue in the abstract!

I can’t tell you how often the lie “the US has never lost a war” was repeated as a point of pride by authority figures. I think that shit really matters to them, and especially to the type of person who would be on board with this admin

11.03.2026 16:26 👍 8 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

When I was in hs I had this theory that the reason we didn’t officially declare war was so if we lost we could say “we didn’t lose - we aren’t at war.” As I got older, I favored more complex explanations, but I think teen Michael actually had this right. It’s war if we win, just a lil op if we don’t

“Founded by teenagers” feels exactly right. If you’ve ever had a kid tell that all you need to do to solve an intractable problem with contradictory moral frames is, ya know, “just let the phone do it!” then you actually understand today’s economic elites better than they do themselves.

Difficult to emphasize just how much a generation of kids has been taught that being dishonest, superficial, and narcissistic is the pathway to attention and therefore success

Here's my Blooski statement that Sen. Kennedy calls hyperbolic. I will defend natural law until the day I die, Senator. People's rights come from their humanity, not their government. If ordered to act unethically, you should always refuse. Do Republicans now disagree?

KENNEDY: You said, 'Republicans think can troll their way to ethnic cleansing.' Did I read that correctly?

BIER: DHS tweeted for 100m deportations. That would be ethnic cleansing!

K: You don't think it's hyperbolic?

B: I think advocating 100m deportations is ethnic cleansing. Yes. Your time is up

I am aware that saying “my wife” like Borat is perhaps the height of cringeworthy millennial behavior, but you need to understand that when I do it I’m actually quoting the Bob’s Burger episode where his dreamworld coworker is saying it, making it much more sophisticated
