New Yorker push notification: meet the people falling in love with their AI companions
I will not. No one can make me.
The John Oliver show is one of the few things that makes me feel sane. They are going to kill it.
Everything is so dumb.
The Discourse has become sort of numb to the fact that the richest guy on earth and owner of a major social media platform just routinely spits out the kind of nakedly white supremacist shit that until a decade ago you rarely saw outside of places like Stormfront.
I mean, just insane levels of fun at the Sunday Session today. We play whatever we want, and thatβs good. Really, bonkers to get to play with people on this level.

Death to ICE
Yes.
Huge topic and I respect the wide spectrum of beliefs here.
Speaking only for myself, I am interested in engagement/communion with a listener.
Self-expression is the default. I am interested in spell casting.
Iβve been helping Devin with his solo album β it surprised me he asked me to produce β but he is absolutely not in a hurry to release it.
Devin is unmotivated about the audience.
Probably one of our key differences? I see art as communication. Not reaching an audience = failure to me.
Devin dgaf.
Iβm super impressed with Devin. I feel awe for him, actually.
Not just impressed with his immense talent, Iβm also impressed with his work ethic.
He seems happy to go back and forth between playing sold out shows with fans freaking out and these low key solo gigs where he plays whatever he wants.
Devinβs solo work is abstract and challenging. Maybe closer to Derek Bailey or Marc Ribot. Involves improvisation and sonic transfiguration with looping pedals, etc.
It wonβt be everyoneβs cup of tea. Devin seems comfortable with that.
He often plays as a duo with Jerry Busher on drums.
Jerry Busher on drums, Devin Ocampo on guitar. A recent restaurant gig.
My bandmate Devin (drums in Beauty Pill, but primarily known as guitarist) has a low key solo career, alongside the newly reactivated Faraquet, the legendary band he founded in the late 90s.
Devin knows any Faraquet show will sell out, so I imagine itβs tempting to put all his energy into that.
Iβm so sorry, man. I can only imagine the pain.
A friend of mine killed himself a month ago and I keep wondering if I could have stopped him.
I want my brain to stop looping about this.
You know what burns me up?
It seemed like they werenβt even objecting to the content of the book.
They seemed to object the *existence* of the book. They felt they should own it or something. (Which isnβt a CRAZY notion necessarily, but they didnβt have to be such absolute dicks about it.)
I should be clear I am not speaking for Marcus. In fact, I bet I am probably more bitter than he is about the whole thing.
That being said, I feel like (a) it wouldnβt have happened if Dave was alive and (b) it put an ugly mark on the legacy of their work for me.
It was unnecessarily painful.
The bandβs response was dumb and hurtful.
Marcus crafted that book for years. A deeply researched work of passion.
The band shit on it in the most myopic, territorial way. And they psychically stabbed a dude who loved them with all his heart. Painful.
They fucked up. They should apologize.
[3/3]
Lemme say this: I have become friends with Marcus Moore. I like him a lot.
Marcus is studious and humble. Heβs also a sweetheart. Cares deeply about music and musicians and culture.
His book about De La is 1/3 loving tribute, 1/3 critical exegesis and 1/3 personal narrative. Itβs beautiful. [2/3]
De La Soul used to be on my Mt Rushmore, along with the Beatles and Fugazi. Just the best shit on earth.
But Iβm finding I canβt get over the way they treated Marcus Moore. Foul and ugly and mean.
I wanted to get over it, but I think about it every time I hear a De La song.
I might be over them.

Short answer re: overwhelmed: yes. I'm not alone in that, though.
I've been in and out of the hospital a lot recently. Complications from transplant meds. My health is a constant challenge.
So that's a factor in this new album, alongside societal collapse... not to put too fine a point on it.
Iβm about to download the new IOS, simply on the premise that I donβt think it can get worse.
Let me be clear: Iβm glad Kristi Noem was fired. But we still have to abolish ICE.
Kristi Noem has done a stunning amount of damage and itβs good sheβs gone.
But this doesnβt change the fact that we need a complete overhaul of DHS, impartial investigations into the killings of two American citizens, and information on children that were taken from Minnesota.
Iβm going to work on a posthumous album for my friend Tim.
Tim, I love you and I would do anything for you.
This was the case in life and it is the case in death. β€οΈ

We had a band meeting tonight via zoom, discussing future plans. My bandmate Drew is rocking a mustache. I think this is a recent development. (Or if it isn't, I don't think I've ever noticed before.) I think it works. I'm into it.
