Inspiring talks at #AXON2025:
@eloisaherrera.bsky.social on reusing axon guidance mechanisms to repair the adult visual system, and @guillelbendito.bsky.social (@glb-lab.bsky.social) on how spontaneous activity and genes shape sensory circuit development 👏#Neuroscience
Great news from #AXON2025 in Rotterdam! 🎉
PhD student Patricia Ordoño @eloisaherrera.bsky.social
won the Best Blitz Presentation Award for “Retinal spontaneous activity and optic nerve myelination”.
Huge recognition for her outstanding work!🏆

New paper out at the Journal of Neuroscience from our president’s @eloisaherrera.bsky.social lab!👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻
This work opens up new avenues for exploring EphA4 broader implications in other cellular contexts, including cell differentiation, migration and synaptic plasticity
Instead of repulsion as previously belief, the tyrosine kinase receptor EphA4, through its ligand ephrinB1, mediates cell adhesion during the establishment of the visual retinotopic map along the medio-lateral collicular axis 🧐
Short thread below 🧵
We have identified a novel role for the EphA4 protein in visual system development

In situ hybridisation of embryonic chicken eyes confirmed expression of candidate genes, including multiple WNT genes, in tissues important for anterior eye development and function.
Lens-regulated genes implicated in periocular mesenchyme, cornea and anterior optic cup development were identified.
To advance understanding of the molecular regulation of eye development by the lens, we performed transcriptome analysis of lens-removed and contralateral unoperated embryonic chicken eyes.
Happy to share our collaborative work 🥳 @eloisaherrera.bsky.social @neuroalc.bsky.social @uniofaberdeen.bsky.social Identification of lens-regulated genes driving anterior eye development and eye size www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... 🧵
