2026 is the year game devs and gamers will unite with a collective “wtf is going on?”

Made the rookie mistake pulling up X/Twitter a day after all these gamedev layoff announcements came to a head this week.

Barely functioning GBA from eBay turned into Mountain Dew themed upgrade with LCD screen update #retrohandheld #retrogaming
Picked up a new hobby of eBay surfing for my childhood retro handheld consoles to refurbish and upgrade their screens for my collection #retrogaming #gameboymods

- Buys LCD steam deck during massive sale when other handhelds hike up prices
- Ignores steam autumn game sales
- Obsessively downloads emulator/ROMs to play modded retro games on a nice screen
Steam deck 10/10
Finally joining the Steam Deck gang after the autumn sale 20% discount on LCD models. It may be coincidental, but I respect that Valve discounts their handheld when other companies are hiking up prices
Some days I want to pursue indie solo dev. And then I remember the logistics of all that paperwork and the gap of being unemployed at the off-chance your product will amass enough attention to sell. So then I go back to my corporate wage cage and cry in triple-A.
How will youngblood devs learn to grow and work in a team setting so they can make their mistakes and learn from them as I did when I started out in 2014? Industry innovation only happens when torches get passed.
It’s a safer bet from a business perspective as budgets get tighter, sure, but what happens in ten years when devs begin to retire or leave the industry due to its volatility?
Unfortunately, these days companies invest in senior roles for their years of skill build up, understanding how pipelines work for interdepartmental collaboration, and not letting personal ambition get in the way of slowing production to hit milestones.
Barriers of entry for next gen talent and skill gaps are just getting bigger. Over correction of interest rate cuts during the pandemic tech boom compounded by the current uncertain economic climate is creating an unsustainable industry.
- it crushes any ambition and drive for people to step out of their comfort zone to innovate on new ideas or passions. There's that saying that children are our future, and it applies to industries. Making it harder for new innovation to break through means we'll just be stagnant with progress.
- knowing the job market has been rough. It creates a level of content for those who feel like they're working to the bone should be lucky they even have a job, let alone fight for a salary they believe they're worth. The way the industry, let alone the economy, has been going -
Lately, companies are tightening budgets causing them to hire senior levels only as they bring not just skills in their specialty, but also experience in navigating pipelines and collaborating with other departments, giving them a bigger bang for their buck. All while also low balling salaries-
Nice. Got to do that thing people do.

Sucks seeing people at a studio using proprietary software for 10+ years shut down. It’s an reminder to stay up to date with the latest and greatest so you’re not bottlenecking your skill set in a volatile industry :(
Are OLEDs worth it for work/productivity? Or is it like 3d glasses? You notice the difference for 15 minutes before you forget about the special features that you dished the extra $ for.
