ICE has arrested and detained a Nashville journalist who reported stories critical of ICE. Sheβs married to a U.S. citizen and has been seeking asylum here after fleeing death threats in Colombia because of her journalism there.
Theyβve already sent her to Louisiana.
Correction. Orwell never said this. He did however, warn that: "political language... is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.β (That's Politics and the English Language, one of my favorite essays)

This is not the most important thing, but now I'm super curious:

Oh that's a dope column idea thank you!

If news of the media rapidly falling into the hands of right-wing billionaires is disturbing to you (it should be!), you need to be thinking not just about individual reporters you like (or places that tell you what you want to hear) but places that are building a better, organized news future
Newsrooms with scale can break bigger stories and stay on top of everything. Freelancers can get big scoops too, but there is a firehouse of news every day that deserves to be written down -- and we need big, organized newsrooms dedicated to writing it down every single day to cover the torrent
Pay for however many newsletters you want, please, give all those writers money
But you can't replace a whole journalism ecosystem with a series of freelancers, you just can't. There also needs to be support for serious papers, magazines, online newsrooms, and nonprofit reporting
we just lost the postβs international desk β one of the best β and now weβll lose this.
and after the pentagon kicked out all the actual correspondents.
right as the nation/mad king is on the brink of another illegal war. yeah, this is bad
there was a lot of critical reporting CNN did last year during/after the CDC attack. losing that big newsroom reporting capacity is bad, especially for atlanta. many journalists of color work there too. this all comes as the town paper AJC cut half its newsroom (almost all POC and women, apparently)
CNN has a solid, well-funded newsroom, regardless of the networkβs editorial slant. a lot of good reporters will lose their jobs, and the public will lose all the stories they wouldβve reported. and they are one of the last newsrooms to pay for costly but critical on the ground war correspondents.
One of the most clarifying and revealing things you can realize about authoritarians is that they are just irrepressibly soft, pathetic, and only comfortable if they are crushing skulls or playing the victim.
when a tv station that's an affiliate of a HUGE mainstream media outlet reports some atrocity or tragedy etc. -- and people share the link saying "msm doesn't want you to know this," i just block... (informed criticism is great. mindlessly bashing good work that get done serves no purpose.)
They found him. He died.

Amazon is opening its wishlists to third-party sellers, which means it can no longer control who has your delivery address. this is a huge privacy risk for sex workers, influencers, and anyone who uses public lists: www.404media.co/amazon-wishl...
This move by Dorus Matsui reeks of desperation. They must be really scared of Mai Vang's campaign.

You mean the guy who still can't find an 82 year-old woman taken from her home?
Interior photograph of a square tower supporting a decorated domed ceiling at the Shah Imam mosque in Isfahan. Three of the four sides of the tower have windows open to a blue sky with white clouds. The walls of the tower are predominantly blue tile with intricate gold decorations. At the ceiling the decorations become more intensive, making gold the main color. The overall impression is of great beauty and serenity, arising from the labor, craftsmanship, and care of vast numbers of people.
During the 2010s, physics student Reza Domiri Ganji got permission to take high-quality photos in various Iranian mosques. As a completely avoidable, pointlessly destructive conflict looms, it's worth remembering what can be achieved when people create instead of smash.
