The initiative supports Nepal’s clean energy ambitions. Under NDC 3.0, the country targets 28,500 MW of hydropower and expanding electric stove use to 15,000 institutions and SMEs by 2035.

The experience of these 20 entrepreneurs shows that eCooking is not only safer and cleaner — it also leads to significant cost savings, making electric cooking a smart economic choice for rural businesses.
Twenty entrepreneurs joined the scheme. eCooking solutions were co-designed to match their specific needs. While the project covered only part of the initial costs, it ensured proper technical setup, training and ongoing support.
Through awareness-raising, live demonstrations, a differentiated subsidy scheme, technical support and follow-up talks, the project highlights the importance of targeting Nepal’s commercial sector to accelerate the clean energy transition.
This initiative, under the WISIONS Innovation Lab Nepal, is implemented in partnership with People, Energy and Environment Development Association (PEEDA) and Winrock International. It promotes electric cooking solutions tailored for business use.
⚡️ Advancing Nepal's energy transition from the kitchen of rural entrepreneurs
Small entrepreneurs are the backbone of Nepal’s rural economy. In Baglung, they are leading a quiet but powerful shift — moving from LPG and firewood to electric cooking technology.
By working with nature rather than against it, bioengineering helps stabilize slopes, reduce erosion, and protect critical infrastructure — offering a sustainable, affordable pathway to build long-term climate resilience in mountain communities.

In Nisikohla Rural Municipality, Baglung, recurrent floods and landslides have damaged micro-hydropower infrastructure and threatened local livelihoods.

By transforming community-operated MHP into cooperative models and connecting them to the national grid, the initiative demonstrates how locally managed renewable energy can become economically viable, transparent, and future-ready – supporting livelihoods, entrepreneurship, and energy security.
With support from the WISIONS Innovation Lab and financial backing from the Wuppertal Institute, Winrock International Nepal, together with partners PEEDA and RECOFTC, worked alongside communities in Baglung and Jumla to strengthen the sustainability and resilience of micro-hydropower projects.
Today, many of these systems face growing challenges as demand shifts and the national grid expands. But what if micro-hydropower could evolve rather than disappear?

Before the national grid reached remote areas, micro-hydropower projects (MHP) brought light and opportunity to thousands of rural households across Nepal – built by communities, for communities.

In our Innovation Lab Nepal project, we co-developed solutions with mountain communities in the Galkot–Badigad–Nisi Valley, working closely with local partners and stakeholders.

These include productive uses of energy, building local capacities for operation & maintenance, strengthening local value chains, and making infrastructure climate-resilient. For WISIONS, energy is a means to improve rural livelihoods.
🔍 Looking through the lens of energy
Access to sustainable energy can significantly improve livelihoods in rural regions. But energy alone is not enough – it must be paired with complementary measures to create lasting impact.
Sophia will share findings from research in real-world commercial settings in rural Nepal (Baglung), exploring the feasibility, efficiency & user acceptance of #eCooking for small businesses – plus market & infrastructure factors for success.

As part of our IL Nepal Project, our partner PEEDA organized an 8-day capacity-building seminar to address these gaps. A total of 24 participants came together in Baglung to explore real-life governance challenges & strategies to overcome them, including a field visit to observe best practices.

As part of our #InnovationLabNepal project, our partner RECOFTC Nepal has successfully installed nearly a dozen retaining and crib walls, along with 35 gabions, to protect the MHP powerhouse from potential landslides and intensified river scouring.
