Happy to see this out in early view in Evolution! We tested the roles of signaling and camouflage in the evolution of iris color in Tyranni songbirds. Our findings suggest that bright irises are social/sexual signals mostly associated with species less vulnerable to predation

Pumped to share our work on bird behavior and the 2024 Eclipse, in today's @science.org. 100k bird vocalizations + 10k continent-wide observations from the public = really fun collab led by Liz Aguilar, with @juncowren.bsky.social @mathcancer.bsky.social @imillercrews.bsky.social #NSF

I'm SOOOO EXCITED for this Sex(es) Across Origins Symposium at #SICB2026!!!! I just submitted an abstract for the complementary session (on bird plumage and social selection with @gamaevo.bsky.social), and I hope you consider applying, too! @sicb.bsky.social @sicbjournals.bsky.social
Illustration of a kelp forest in a teal ocean, rays of golden sunlight streaming in from above. Fish are swimming about, and near the bottom of a prominent kelp strand, a partially obscured leopard shark leisurely patrols the underwater forest. The palette predominantly features warmer teals, red violet, and gold.
A California sea lion rendered in rich brown and orange tones rests upon a rock in teal shore waters below a softly glowing orange sky. Its slender head is raised to look over its back and to the right while a large crest of white sea foam frames its figure.
Rendered in a rough painterly style, a shortfin mako shark leaps from a calm ocean tail over head, sea foam trailing its body in a loose arc. The shark, looking nearly metallic, is rimmed with orange light as a pale yellow sun hangs in a hazy orange sky, framing its streamlined figure.
A caribou stands low in a field awash in autumnal oranges and yellows. Its head raised slightly, it looks off to the side while a pair of tall, sweeping antlers rises from its head, a bright red crown of newly hardened branches. Velvet still clings to the antlers in patches and tatters.
Today is my birthday! Iβd love if you could share my art or donate to a nature conservancy of your choice. π
Cuspirostrisornis, an Enantiornithine bird from cretaceous China, sits perched on a branch in the sunlight amid ginkgo and araucaria pines. It has a small yellow snout, black mask, orange back, white belly, and two long iridescent blue tail feathers. It has a fleshy snout rather than a hard beak, and two little claws emerge at the bend of the wing.
A green tortoise beetle climbs downward on a bug-bitten leaf. The beetle has transparent elytra that look like a clear glassy shield over its metallic green and black body.
Illustration of an island set in a shallow tropical lagoon, fringed by Casuarina and coconut trees. The rocky island is covered in vegetation and tiny dots - lots and lots of birds! More birds are seen flying toward the island, and in the foreground some of these are identifiable as Brown Noddy and Red-tailed Tropicbird. For Nature (NorthStar Games). Based on Bird Island, Saipan.
Illustration of an Indochinese Green-Magpie with its wings spread as it lands in a thicket of tropical foliage and flowers, all under a bright blue sky with a few soft clouds. This bird is brilliantly colored with a bright green crested head, black mask, red-orange wings, and fanned yellow tail with a black bar. For NorthStar Games' board game Nature.

She has a black mask covering her face and the base of her bill. Her eye is silvery and has nice lashes. Her neck shades from yellow through raw sienna to a pale burnt sienna, and her body feathers and the top of her wing are black.

So thrilled to have captured this image of iridescence on the wings of these 2 Swallows. It's tricky enough photographing these birds in flight but positioning yourself in relation to the sun a certain way can produce stunning results...
