Ultimately, I don’t care how realistic the setting is, but it bothers me that the parts people call out aren’t even the unrealistic parts🤭
they need to look up feudalism and then look up the military industrial complex.

People point out that mechs are not cost-effective for what they can do. They fail to realize they are not fielded in mass but rather exist as elite units and status symbols for nobility. They are the knights of a space feudalism realm. Powerful against the peasant tank, but at a high price tag.

I don’t think it was ever intended to be a super realistic setting and yet they do a great job exploring just how wacky and crazy humans could be in a space feudalism cyberpunk world while making it feel grounded enough to get into it. History often repeats and that’s captured in the setting.

We don’t even go around glassing each other like they did during the succession wars and we forgotten how to make certain types of guns just because places closed that made them. Even though they had the blue prints and opened a new factory years later, they still are not as good.

People don’t understand how so much technology gets lost and forgotten after the star league, but just look at modern examples. We almost forgot how to make quality school chalk, because the only factory closed. A teacher bought the secret recipe and specialized equipment to save it.

I really love how realistic BattleTech actually is because it factors in how unrealistic humans can be. We are creatures of hubris and arrogance. we often have to learn our lessons hard because confidence and curiosity outweighs our self preservation. It is our greatest strength and weakness.

People will say that the LAM’s (Land Air Mechs) in BattleTech are unrealistic and stupid, but then forget this actually happened in World War II. In setting they are intended to be ridiculous and they don’t typically work well. A surprising amount of battletech minics real history
