Yeah it's almost as if forcing a dependency to replace a dependency is harmful to someone's mental health. I'm sorry it happened to someone you knew, this shit sucks to experience when they're led to believe that it's all their fault and only one thing can save them.

It's unfortunately something that has been part of it since the inception, like again it's okay to develop your own spirituality and join a religion if that's your choice as part of your rehab but these programs stem from a form of missionary mindset to convert people to Christianity through guilt.

If you found acceptance of yourself through your already existing religious beliefs, that's good. But you had that choice.

Non-Christian or even atheist/agnostic recovering addicts being pressured to forego a part of themselves because you say that's the only way they can heal? That's bad.

This is not to bash religion or Christianity, but this is a critique against this method of rehabilitation where you are forcing a religious conversion onto someone because they cannot be trusted to have that power in themselves or with community but only through a higher power.

Yes this is partly brought on by the Shia news stuff but like you start to realize looking at AA programs it is pretty weird that part of it is essentially pushing Christianity. Like, literally 7 of the 12 steps are based around surrendering yourself to God because you can't do it yourself.

I'm pretty sure people who follow me know that conversion therapy is shit and harmful to children and even adults, but I want to propose that we also recognize the harm that forcing religious conversion in things like Alcoholics Anonymous can be if it is not a choice they make themselves.
