I was surprised AI tools can get simple math wrong. I tried several models with the same simple math problem- to add 20 four figure numbers. 2/3 got it wrong. I asked it, "Are you sure? Check again." Still wrong. Skeptical thinking required for AI for sure.

Though much remains uncertain (e.g. outcomes of lawsuits re: canceled grants), it is clear that U.S. gov funding for science β especially science that intersects w/ concerns about human flourishing β is going to be significantly diminished in coming years. Here are a few things we can do to help:

With financial support in limbo, this UA cancer lab started crowdfunding
As federal funding changes hit universities, key research initiatives are scrambling to find cash. The Schroeder Lab at UA is one of them.
This is where we are, America. One of my old colleagues at the University of Arizona Cancer Center has set up a GoFundMe to help fund breast cancer research in the wake of massive cuts to NIH grants.

Funding freeze at Northwestern from Emma Mairson at
grant-watch.us. Data from USAspending. Normally, ~$70 M per month. Now, bupkis.
Northwestern is keeping research moving and must be spending ~$40 M per month. Clearly not sustainable for too long.

FB post from BoT member Vivian Wilson, with a photo of a letter she received from Gov. Mike Braun, informing her, in one sentence, that she has been removed from her position effective immediately.
Indiana's governor fired all the elected members of Indiana University's Board of Trustees. Given a recent policy change, he'll be able to fill those seats with appointees. Which means he'll basically have unilateral control over IU decisions, including who gets hired, tenured, and fired.

Trump Has Cut Science Funding to Its Lowest Level in Decades (Gift Article)
The lag in funding extends far beyond D.E.I. initiatives, affecting almost every area of science: chemistry, computing, engineering, materials and more.
NSF Physics was cut by 85%, basically wiping out most of its capacity for supporting research.
NSF Astronomy was cut by 53%
Undergrad education was cut by 71% and research on learning by 79%
Graduate education was cut by 100% to ZERO.

This is a decision to hobble innovation in the United States, slash our high skill workforce, force out some of the world's best and brightest, and kneecap America's status as a top destination for the world's brightest students.
It is the exact opposite of policy to fuel our future prosperity.

say it again:
4 million people work in higher ed, the largest employer in 10 states, second largest employer in 10 more, and in 60 of the 100 biggest cities
ROI for NIH and NSF for local economies is conservatively 4x, often close to 10x
demolishing higher education is economic sabotage

This is completely false. Even the largest university endowment cannot sustain large-scale scientific research.
In my 25 years at my school, the most monumental research fund drive raised $325M in *total*. Federal research here costs $200M per *every year*.
This is an extinction-level event.

NSF just cancelled ALL grants to Harvard researchers. Thatβs right - physics, astronomy, bio, CAREER - ALL. Professors wonβt get paid. Postdocs wonβt get paid. PhD students wonβt get paid. This is insane!
If they can do this to Harvard, they can do this to your school.

Women, minorities fired in purge of NIH science review boards
Scientists, with expertise in fields that include mental health, cancer and infectious disease, typically serve five-year terms and were not given a reason for their dismissal.
Thirty-eight of 43 experts cut last month from the boards that review the science and research that happens in laboratories at the National Institutes of Health are female, Black or Hispanic, according to an analysis by the chairs of a dozen of the boards.
