Our results add to a growing body of literature characterizing how maternal psychological and social wellbeing are associated with the gut microbiome in infancy, and highlight how supporting maternal wellbeing can impact infant development
We found that infants whose mothers reported higher levels of social support had less diverse gut microbiota, and showed differences in abundances of several genera in the gut. We did not find similar associations between maternal stress and features of the infant gut microbiota
In a small cohort of mothers and infants from NYC, we examined prospective associations between maternal stress and social support and the diversity and composition of the infant gut microbiome when infants were 12 months old
I am thrilled to share a new manuscript, out in Scientific Reports: Examining associations among maternal stress, social support, and the infant gut microbiota. In collaboration with @fquerdasi.bsky.social, @drbcallaghan.bsky.social, and @nataliebrito.bsky.social: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Congratulations Laurel, and thank you for compiling these resources!
We found that infants with more diverse gut microbiome in early infancy showed higher levels of negative affect during a study visit when they were 2.5 years old
In this pre-registered study, I examined associations between features of the infant gut microbiome from two time points and a behavioral measure of negative affect at 2.5 years old

A growing body of literature has identified associations between the gut microbiome and temperament in infants and toddlers, but there is still a lot to be learned and results between studies have been quite mixed
