Which loosely coincides with the general time frame that the newer part of the RE fanbase arrived post RE7. Newer, younger fans arriving, bringing with them the types of fanfiction they might have written in other fandoms.
I could be totally wrong on this, but I feel like that trope in general may have been popularized on Wattpad. And since that tends to have a younger user base, I have to imagine established character/reader fics predominantly became a thing in the last decade, roughly.

RE7 was a mainline entry that was connected to the rest of the franchise with wider lore implications, and 8 directly builds off of it (even 9). Now I like the Anderson movies as action films just fine, but the man got to make SIX movies that were very explicitly their own thing.
