A decade ago, we published our highly cited "Hydrological Feedbacks in Northern Peatlands" paper in Ecohydrology.
Today the sequel just dropped!

Please Nederland, laten we zorgen dat de PVV weggestemd wordt morgen. Dan is alvast de eerste rot uit onze samenleving.

As climate extremes intensify, temperate peatlands, which are key sources of drinking water, face growing threats. Our work highlights the need for long-term monitoring + targeted strategies to manage legacy pollution post-fire. π₯π§

We found that our study site was generally resistant to immediate (acute) metal pollution after wildfire. But, months later, heavy rain can wash legacy metals trapped in the catchment into reservoirs, raising long-term (chronic) water quality risks.
Excited to share our new paper in Environmental Research: Water!
We studied how wildfires and drought mobilise legacy metal contaminants from peatlands, focusing on the 2018 Stalybridge Moor fire in the UK.

Image of red moss sporophytes with some white lichen.
Even when you feel small, you can stand tall and be resilient. Moss sporophytes eject spores into the atmosphere with one of the greatest physical forces measured in biology. We find these spores in sediments collected in the middle of the ocean. Wee but mighty.
β»οΈ Activity on this platform has increased a lot over the last month, so we thought we'd bring back this post about Dr Cat Moody's awesome study.
Please get in touch with Cat if you do field work and can collect some water samples for her project π§π¦

Peatland friends! We're convening our #Peatland #Hydrology session at #EGU25. There are lots of peaty sessions on the programme this year so it will be an excellent opportunity for us all to get together. You can submit your abstract here: bit.ly/4hVgSE7 #PeatlandsMatter #PeatSky #PeatECR

About three weeks to our 2024 Nobel Peat Prize announcement!
Do you have a fave #peatland paper amongst our five finalists?
So a bunch of Canadian wetland hydrologists got together and wrote a state-of-the-science review and synthesis of wetland hydrology!
