We put together a letter campaign to remind Sound Transit and elected officials how important it is to keep light rail to West Seattle on track.
If you live in, work in, or visit West Seattle, please send an email πͺβ¨ we made it quick and easy!

Paging all young Transpo nerds!
And I mean it. Whereas in past years I might get a little guff here and there about a bike, even a folding bike that meets carry-on requirements, every one of my recent rides with both my regular size bike and the Brompton have been smooth and friendly.
Since 2016 when this was written, Amtrak has vastly expanded the ability to bring bikes on board. It welcomes them.
Lol the towpath still running trainside, mocking me.
The first and only time I rode the trail, from DC to Pittsburgh circa 2012, you couldnβt put bikes on the train very easily. That changed around 2015, like so (thatβs my byline btw)

Now, if I were as clever as some folks believe me to be, I would have planned to get off in Cumberland or Martinsburg or Harpers Ferry and ridden into DC and caught the next train on down to FLA.
C&O Towpath on the Potomac as seen from the eastbound Floridian just after departing Harpers Ferry.
Enjoying the multiple meanings to be taken π€£
One more detail: this is an electric Brompton. Thereβs a small part of the electrical system on the seat post that I suspect makes it a slightly tighter fit than an acoustic Brompton. But it still works.
I think I prefer the Viewliner 2 over the Superliner. Not because it is newer β it is, but the roomette design is more functional IMO. Lots (relatively speaking) of room for your stuff and can fit everything in.
UPDATE: as @marensouders.bsky.social suggested, I was able to strap the Brompton in my roomette like so.
OK, so I have been delayed by a day in Chicago but flat tires and breakdowns happen with cars, difference being that Amtrak is actually putting me up for the night, i.e., footing the bill for the breakdown.
Definitely not the only person on this train connecting to the Floridian. Curious how Amtrak will handle it if we are substantially delayed.
Love it. Iβll be in Palmetto/Bradenton and planning to take my Brompton out to Perico and maybe Santa Maria.
Sweeeet. This allays my anxiety. Thank you. Now fingers crossed the commuter train emergency isnβt awful and I can connect to the Floridian tonight!
Oh, so this is across from the sink/steps?! Thatβs great to know!
I have strapped my Brompton into a Viewliner! (Floridian, Chicago to DC, this past November.)
Oo! π
Tell me more? Was the train overbooked or was it more comfy or????
I donβt plan to use the in-roomette toilet since there are also shared restrooms in the Viewliners. So can put the Brompton on top of that.
I do think it will fit because thereβs a toilet or steps / luggage space in both versions of the Viewliner. Plus a smaller nook above. I have bungees if I need to secure anything. π€
Obviously in a room you have more flexibility about snagging a time to shower when the train is stationary!
Luggage rack in Superliner sleeper car. My Brompton is folded and tucked on its side on the lowest level.
Currently Iβm on a Superliner sleeping car, which has a roomy external luggage area. In CHI Iβll switch to a Viewliner, which doesnβt have that but has more space for luggage in the roomette. Will my Brompton fit? TBD!
Most rooms (distinct from roomettes & larger) have their own toilets and shower in the room.
I rode the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Lake Louise last summer. Amazing! Itβs a quite bit different as itβs an excursion line but incredible scenery and 5 star service.
