I used to be skeptical about the "it's all about oil" theory of US activity in the ME, because (1) the US really doesn't have a problem with oil, and (2) it never actually seems to improve energy security. But I have come to believe that promoting oil *insecurity* may very well be the point.
Seems to me that "at a level never seen before" would probably run hard against the Geneva Convention.
