As a German with US relatives, and longtime Swiss resident, this prompted a couple of questions to ponder about over morning coffee: Why no recorded decline in German between 1980 and 1990? A few hypotheses bubbled up. Would I be able to understand Pennsylvania dutch? A quick test indicated “yes”.
