Impact of the pause of U.S. foreign assistance on the HIV response in Kenya
The Ministry of Health in Kenya has developed a national mitigation plan recommending domestic resource allocation and the fast-tracking of the ongoing HIV Sustainability Roadmap. To ensure the continued supply of HIV commodities, the government of Kenya will need to allocate approximately US$ 10 million.
Impacts on health services and human resources: - Shortages of HIV treatment and testing supplies. - Viral load and early infant testing and diagnosis are at risk. - Medical staff have been placed on leave, impacting HIV care. - Many community programmes, including HIV monitoring and data collection have been halted.
UNAIDS is working closely with the Kenyan Government and partners. UNAIDS is part of the Commodity Security team, monitoring the situation closely, identifying gaps and risks, and proposing solutions.
