Plus, Jonas said in the post race interview he wasn't freezing cold during the stage. While many riders clearly were.
If it works it works ๐คทโโ๏ธ
The Ravens are claiming they wanted to sign both Crosby and Hendrickson. Yeah sure, lol
you sound mildly traumatised
Yes and no, Edo and Jonas were both right next to each other around the corner, with Ayuso in front of them. They are easy to tell apart because of the helmet colours.
No news yet but it didn't look good at all
(not life threateningly, which I guess I need to add in this sport... But bad enough that I'm pretty sure he abandoned, though I didn't check)
very very badly...
(for the record, red bull didn't ride because of the crashes, they were riding already because people were dropped in echelons. I don't think anyone thinks they did something unethical there)
everyone around Red Bull crashed in wet echelons except Jonas, Red Bull did the right thing and rode full to give Martinez the 1v1, Jonas went at 1km to go and gained 41s in a km, the twins were crazy strong, Martinez was meh but has an insanely good GC position now.
Jonas Vingegaard in his dungerees wins Stage 4 (with a helping hand from Red Bull-Bora) #ParisNice ๐คฉ๐
Sure, they could have gone for the stage, but for that, one of the twins would have needed about a minute advantage on the Jonas/Martinez group at 1km to go. So Martinez would have had to arrive a minute slower. And he only finished a minute ahead of Steinhauser.
But what though? The Van Dijke brothers were down 5 minutes in GC before the stage. So Jonas would not have reacted to them.
Maybe Red Bull could have gotten the stage then, but they clearly cared more about GC here and they got themselves into a better GC position than they possibly could have imagined before today.
The Van Dijke's were 5 minutes down in GC, Jonas wouldn't give a damn about them, he'd just wait for the Ineos guys and then Martinez gets beaten by Vauquelin as well as Jonas.
Also this is a GC race, so this is very different to riding with MvdP or Pogacar in the classics.
Martinez is clear second now and there are still a ton of stages to go. If anything happens to Jonas, Martinez wins GC.
Not riding would have made it harder for Jonas to win. But it wouldn't have made it easier for Martinez to win. And Red Bull's goal is not to prevent Vingegaard from winning, it's to maximize Martinez' chances.
Just because it helps Jonas doesn't mean it didn't also help Martinez. A ton.
Since I've seen some comments saying Red Bull were wrong for riding:
No they weren't, they did it perfectly. Not because second is the goal, but because if they don't ride, then Martinez still has to beat Jonas, but he has to beat everyone else too.
They optimized his chances ๐คทโโ๏ธ
This is a very very common fallacy in evaluating team tactics. Just because them not riding would have lowered Vingegaard's chances to win, it would not have risen Martinez' chances to win. And Red Bull aren't riding against Vingegaard, they are riding for Martinez.
No that's totally backward. They were racing for Danny Martinez. Danny Martinez had to do no work, same as if they hadn't ridden and waited for the group to catch up.
There was a chance then that *someone else* may have beaten Vinegegaard, but that doesn't help Red Bull.
His skill today was to take 41s on Martinez in 1km, lol.
Sweetheart when someone bowling balls into your bike at 60km/h on wet downhill asphalt, there is no skill involved. Neither for mr Vingegaard nor for mr vdP.

Also, Vingegaard was so damn lucky. The crash itself isn't on camera, but there is a replay that shows the split second right before it. Ayuso was seemingly the first to go down and Jonas was immediately behind him. The crash was behind a hedge from the camera, so I have no clue how Jonas survived.
I wonder if Ineos have regrets tactically about this.
They will of course regret the crashes. But in hindsight, they should have waited for Vauquelin instead of riding for Onley-
BUT: That wasn't really forseeable at the time. Vauquelin was a minute and a half behind Onley. That's an insane choice
This stage feels so weird. Vingegaard looked super strong, but also, everything went in his favour without him having to do a thing.
I love that he won, but I would have really liked to see how he stacks up against someone that isn't Danny Martinez.
These moments are always so surreal, be that Vingegaard or Pogacar:
"Oh, this is actually your top pace? Alright then, I can go twice as fast, byeeeee"
Haha, the Van Dijke twins will share the combativity. That's awesome
Lol, Milan, what the hell was that? That was like 300m too early
Tirreno about to finish, go switch over for 2 mins
