Awful. A very sad day for everyone.

This was a line in Mock the Week last night. I can't remember who actually said it. Probably @daraobriain.bsky.social Rhys James or Milton Jones (who may or may not be on here)

If there was or had ever been funding to make this possible, that would have been great. But I think and hope that most institutions reply to emails.

They certainly do but might not have received the FOI request as it (mostly) focused on human remains from other countries

Put Trump’s criticism of Starmer and other democratic leaders against his consistent syrupy praise for authoritarian, brutal leaders.
Starmer is in good company. Just remind yourself how Trump praises authoritarian antidemocratic leaders in this thread. It’s an eye opener 🧡 1/

I know that we discussed as a department how best to answer the FOI request so I imagine others also had issues. And this reporting seems to be unaware of that.

Which human remains are held in UK museums – and where? Institutions including the Natural History Museum and Cambridge University hold more than 263,000 human remains, Guardian investigation finds

There is also this one which states that Winchester holds the remains of 150 individuals excavated in Britain: www.theguardian.com/world/2026/m...

And British institutions are ahead of many other countries on this (but behind others). I am on scientific advisory board of a museum in EU country and it is a very hard fight to make these points (which I do repeatedly and very regularly)

This is a v weird list. University of Winchester does not have space for that number unless each fragment counted separately. I, as person responsible in Soton, don't have any idea of number of bones but do know approx number of individuals

They don't hold that much. They have difficulty with teaching of human osteology sometimes but might have borrowed collections from Hampshire Museums and Winchester Museums etc. But certainly nothing like that unless every individual bone counted separately

This infographic was produced in order of MP’s money earned from other jobs.

Ooh look who’s front and centre, it’s β€œman of the people” Nigel Mirage.

Not often seen in his constituency but topping the charts of additional earnings.

Always thought this was succinct & powerful:

β€œNearly every government that goes to war underestimates its duration, neglects to tally all the costs, and overestimates the political objectives that can be accomplished by the use of brute force.”

But we do already pay for plumbers. We pay for them to do training in FE and via apprenticeships.

No, it is the children who are wrong This week: Keir Starmer has decided that he blames the voters. Also: some golden age anti-car propaganda; and some new maps of British living standards.

"Where’s the soul searching about why voters might have defected to a challenger from the left? Why, in God’s name, did anyone think it was a good idea to imply a large chunk of Labour’s coalition is, in fact, stupid?"

Newsletter out. Bit angry.

Initially most people will be internally displaced by conflict. Most people have neither the resources or contacts to cross an international border to become a refugee. The longer a conflict goes on however the more routes are created, both in terms of smuggling and trafficking. 1/4

1 of my kids HATED the costume aspect - we always had to carry school uniform with us to school on World Book Day too to reassure kid. Made it v stressful. And we always went for simple homemade costumes (as did most at primary school eg lots of boys in dresses etc)

Most Reform members believe non-white UK citizens born abroad should be forced or encouraged to leave, poll finds Nigel Farage’s recent efforts to woo centre-ground voters may cause tension in party’s right flank, says Hope Not Hate

Personally, I'd have gone with the fact that "one in five (22%) also supported it for non-white citizens whose parents were born in the UK" for the headline. 😱

Inconvenient facts for Farage Reform’s own involvement with β€œforeign voters”...

Great article from Sam @writesbright.bsky.social on Farage's impersonation of Trump's favourite tantrum and lie - "the election was stolen" 😭

Feeling very stressed. Have just signed the forms and handed over huge amounts of money to Kitnocks. All because #Alzheimer's has done horrible things to my mother and changed her completely. #DementiaSucks

Kansas revoked transgender people’s IDs overnight – researchers anticipate cascading health and social consequences With invalid driver’s licenses and birth certificates, transgender people are at risk for more than just steep fines and imprisonment.

Very important essay from @zacharydubois.bsky.social @jaepuckett.bsky.social & Noelle Martin-- "Invalidating someone’s identification documents has immediate and powerful consequences that cascade into all aspects of their life." theconversation.com/kansas-revok...

This amused me.
I feel so sorry for everyone in the area but, I have to admit, definitely less sorry for those who moved there to avoid paying taxes and lived off the backs of people from poorer parts of the world. Especially feel sorry for indentured/slave labourers who have nowhere safe to go

Today is #RareDiseaseDay & we are celebrating by highlighting the invaluable work of the Undiagnosed Diseases Network (UDN)! Formed in 2020, it aims to solve the most challenging medical mysteries using advanced technologies. In this thread, we will highlight their use of the #zebrafish model. 1/5 πŸ§ͺ
