This colourful and widespread species overwinters as an imago (adult) and can withstand temperatures as low as -20°C. It often overwinters in dark places such as caves, sheds, even rabbit holes.

A Callicera aurata female from 2021 🪰. This particular species of #hoverfly is mainly found in old deciduous tree #forests. Its larva develops in old tree cavities with water and the adult feeds on pollen and nectar.
