In comparison/contrast, I've been surprisingly comfortable in certain self-selected groups. For example, I don't know how many of my college improv group were autistic or similar, but I do know we were all there because we wanted to be, pressure was low, we set our own norms, and we got along well.
Anecdotally (from both myself and others I know), those of us who were okay at school-type stuff were the ones who did most of or all the work in group projects. I'd classify that as "able to work in a group, but this is not the ideal circumstance."

This is a *living* tradition. Next time you're at a convention, see if there's a "Filk" track going on, and you might just find your people.
That means that, when off-watch, sailors would sing for leisure. There's so much material culture here - the age of sail overlapped with the age of recording. We actually have recordings of wooden navy songs.
This recording is from the 20s, recorded on a wax cylinder.
"Roll the Old Chariot Along," which appears on that cylinder, isn't just a shanty.
It's *directly* ported over from enslaved Black workers. It's a field song, that just *happened* to also be useful on ships.
To keep going, just as an explainer on the tradition:
Shanties in the truest sense are songs sung with specific beats and structures for specific time signatures. The style of song depended on what the purpose was.
