I'm a complete child about having to sit upstairs on double-decker trains!

some of them are definitely lions to be avoided, though.

Yes, I didn't see those other shows until I was in NZ where they were also shown as daytime tv (I think they were in the US too) and they were very different. Dallas, Dynasty and Knots Landing were super glossy and 80s big hair and fast cars by comparison.

I don't have sources for this, but I think Dallas might have been an early example of overseas markets starting to matter a LOT to US tv/film cos I think much of its success was driven by the UK (and Ireland?) because of Wogan. Even the Who Shot JR stuff was maybe Wogan and not a thing in the US?

Yes but (like me), Glinner is just old enough to actually remember Dallas and shouldn’t need to rely on Simpson’s refs! It was *everywhere* in the mid-80s even if you didn’t actually watch it. Terry Wogan was obsessed with it - hetalked about it on his show and had the stars over for his tv show.

The first Great Dane I knew well was called Cleo and if you sat down in her home she promptly climbed onto your lap for a cuddle. The biggest baby ever.

Any tenured staff who don’t both refuse to do this kind of shite AND loudly explain to university management why they’re refusing aren’t worth the salaries they’re getting.

Old heating systems that cost too much to replace, in most cases. Think older suburban house with elderly occupants (and many rural houses with fewer options in the past).

Public Sector vs Private Sector in one paragraph! In the public sector stuff like this has to be advertised, checked, all notes subject to FOI, interviews and feedback for all candidates. In the private sector, one person can allocate resources in an afternoon and what could possibly go wrong?

How to Talk to Someone Experiencing 'AI Psychosis' Mental health experts say identifying when someone is in need of help is the first step β€” and approaching them with careful compassion is the hardest, most essential part that follows.

I saw your post yesterday and have now just seen this article: I can't judge but 404 Media is typically a good source so hopefully it might be of some use for you.

Is this like when that Chinese zoo got caught dressing up a large dog as a lion?

And so it begins: the interspecies war we have long dreaded

I’d be ok with this happening more often, and on a global scale, tbh.

It is hilariously Dickensian, isn't it? 😬

So I hear! But also apparently the wonderfully-named Office of the Public Guardian can't spring for an international stamp. One set of papers gave me 3 weeks to make objections/changes to my appointment and (of course) arrived well after the 3 weeks was up!

I'm an appointee under the UK system - and we've just had to go thru it a second time because we wanted to make changes. It's VERY cumbersome, which I understand as it's so serious. What drives me mad tho is they post the papers 2nd class from the UK to Ireland and they take a month to arrive!

Robert Harris was right, wasn’t he?

Not a word about the snakes of course - the real victims in all this.

It’s especially alarming that, according to his profile, he works for Blackboard, an edtech company!

This is SUCH a good explanation of what’s happened - possibly the best I’ve seen - but unfortunately it’ll be incomprehensible to 95% of English people!

Those of us of a certain age used to be randomly shown Soviet/Eastern Bloc animations like these (despite us being in the middle of the Cold War) when the BBC needed to fill a random 10mins in children’s programming before Blue Peter started. They were all very horizon-expanding.

I've always felt safe in hotels because it's never occurred to me they might just *give some bloke a key* at 3am! I once locked myself out of my own room in a hotel in Chicago and they got a security guard to let me back in and check my ID before he let me stay there. And that seemed a good idea!
