(6/6) I finally learned QGIS + systematic review + lots about genome sequencing for this project; I was also lucky enough to go to ASTMH 2025 to present on another project, and got to speak to a bunch of awesome Shigella-people about this project! If you've made it this far, thanks for reading :)

(5/6) I started this project hoping to map Shigella spp. in Africa identified with genome sequencing, but ran into limits (data standards/technical ability), and the study shifted to mapping the methods themselves. It still highlights an important aspect of collaborations in the Shigella space!

Map + Histogram of the studies' publication years

(4/6) I mapped states in the study by the year of their most recent included publication + charted the studies' year of publication. All genome sequencing methods, from 16s rRNA to nanopore, were included, explaining the high number of studies in the early 2010s.

(3/6) I ran a systematic search that produced 22 studies for inclusion in the study; only 18 are mapped due to later data availability/resolution issues. There are fewer than 18 lines shown because studies often send samples to the same global north states for analysis. (colonial relationships?)

(2/6) Included studies largely relied on labs in the global north to analyze samples. On average, samples traveled 9300 km from collection to sequencing, showing the continued inequitable concentration of genome sequencing capacity in the global north. (Shocker, I know!)

(1/6) 2nd attempt posting this because apparently bluesky doesn’t save drafts? Or warn you if you try to click off? Anyway, check out this map from my global health senior paper, “The use of genome sequencing in identifying Shigella species and serotypes in Africa.”

Hi! I’m Leo, and I’m an undergrad in the Global Health program at Georgetown, with interests in climate, health, and policy. Right now, I’m working on climate epi stuff at Carlsonlab.bio, and I’m looking forward to learning from everyone and sharing my work here!

Cat tax to kick things off :)
