I highly recommend this intro to the philosophy of scientific explanation to all my neuroscience colleagues and others interested in how to think about scientific investigation and development of theory, e.g., it's highly relevant to our ongoing discussions about the brain organization of language.
William Labov died last week after a ground-breaking career at the intersection of language use and culture. His work on variability motivated me early on (doi.org/10.1006/brln...) and has since motivated our work on whole brain contributions to comprehension (doi.org/10.1101/2023...). Thank you.
