#OTD 222 AD: After the assassination of #Elagabalus, the Praetorian Guard backed the 13-year-old #SeverusAlexander as emperor. He restored traditional cults and ruled for 13 years until murdered by his own troops in 235AD, triggering the Crisis of the Third Century.

Today is the anniversary of the end of the First Punic War.

The First Punic War lasted between the years 264-241 BCE . It was fought between the Roman Republic and the Carthaginian empire. After major losses on both sides, Rome defeated the Carthaginians in the First Punic War.

Launching in 1969, it even spawned a movie of the same name in 1971. If you're a fan of Carry on Cleo, might be worth a watch, as it was written by one of the same writers.

The character names are a lesson in British seaside postcard humour- Ludicrus Sextus, his wife Ammonia; Erotica & Nausius & Senna the Soothsayer. Anything but subtle🤣

Up Pompeii was a British TV series from the 1960s/70s, set in Ancient Rome and following the adventures of Lurcio, a slave to a wealthy family. Lurcio was played by Frankie Howerd, always with a cheeky nod and wink.

Next to this ancient path lies Soutra Aisle, a tangible link to Scotland's past. Originally founded as a 12th-cent hospital by Malcolm IV, it later served as a burial site for the Pringle family. Happy birthday to Annia Aurelia Galeria #Lucilla! 🎂Daughter of #MarcusAurelius & Faustina the Younger, & granddaughter of Antoninus Pius, she was born 7 Mar c AD148–150.
Widow of co-emperor Lucius Verus, she later joined a failed plot against her brother Commodus in AD182 and was executed, aged 34.

#AntoninusPius, #Roman Emperor, died #OTD 7 Mar AD161 aged 74. One of the “Five Good Emperors”, his reign, known for stability and prosperity, saw Rome advance into Caledonia & build the Antonine Wall (AD142). He was succeeded by Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, Rome’s first joint emperors.

Today is #DentistsDay. Although #dentistry did not exist as a separate profession, #Romans had ways to take care of their teeth. Archaeological and textual evidence shows that they practiced tooth extraction and cauterisation of infected gums in addition to using a variety of medical concoctions.

The fort and pagus of Micia, in modern-day #Romania, was built in early 2nd century AD during the #Roman conquest of #Dacia. At its peak, it housed over 6000 soldiers and civilians. Micia had artisan workshops, baths, two necropolises and even an #amphitheatre.

The #Bloomberg tablets are 405 #Roman writing tablets found in London. One tablet reads "Londinio Mogontio,". This reference to #London is dated to 65-80 AD, about fifty years before Tacitus mentions London in his Annals.

At #Butser Ancient Farm in Hampshire, replica #IronAge buildings are reconstructed from excavated plans. Crops are grown from ancient varieties & livestock selected to resemble early breeds, allowing agricultural practices to be tested in real conditions.

Happy Matronalia! Ancient festival celebrated on 1st Mar in honour of Juno Lucina, #Roman goddess of childbirth & motherhood. Women took part in rituals at Juno's temple, they were allowed to wear their hair loose & received gifts from their daughters & husbands.
Household slaves had the day off.

The #Kalends of March marked the original #Roman New Year. The sacred fire was renewed 🔥 and the farming, sailing & military seasons began.
Named for #Mars, god of war & legendary father of Romulus & Remus, making him a divine ancestor of the Roman people.

After the #Romans arrived in #Britain, hare bones appear first start to appear in middens. After 410 AD, brown #hare populations fell dramatically suggesting they had been primarily kept and farmed rather than hunted as game animals.

Today was the first the #Equirria, an ancient #Roman #festival of horse & chariot racing. The two events were held in the Campus Martius on Feb 27 & Mar 14. Believed to have been founded by Romulus in honour of Mars, god of war.

A #Roman bone die found at #Trimontium. The die is very similar to a modern example. The points are marked by incised circles with holes in the centres and someone last threw it sometime between AD80-100. This is part of the #NationalMuseumsScotland collection.

#Crannogs were built as stone or wooden islands in lochs & bogs. Most date to the Late Bronze Age & Iron Age, but the earliest example, Eilean Dòmhnuill, is Neolithic!
