#AntoninusPius, #Roman Emperor, died #OTD 7 Mar AD161 aged 74. One of the βFive Good Emperorsβ, his reign, known for stability and prosperity, saw Rome advance into Caledonia & build the Antonine Wall (AD142). He was succeeded by Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, Romeβs first joint emperors.

Today is #DentistsDay. Although #dentistry did not exist as a separate profession, #Romans had ways to take care of their teeth. Archaeological and textual evidence shows that they practiced tooth extraction and cauterisation of infected gums in addition to using a variety of medical concoctions.

A #Roman bone die found at #Trimontium. The die is very similar to a modern example. The points are marked by incised circles with holes in the centres and someone last threw it sometime between AD80-100. This is part of the #NationalMuseumsScotland collection.

#Crannogs were built as stone or wooden islands in lochs & bogs. Most date to the Late Bronze Age & Iron Age, but the earliest example, Eilean DΓ²mhnuill, is Neolithic!
