there was a blogpost people were sharing and bravo-ing a couple weeks ago that did this very thing while calling someone ELSE out for making real world comparisons without considering the in-game context - they also elided the racism lmao

ngl Iβm getting incredibly frustrated by people treating the allegory of Resident Evil 5 (as a reflection of companies from the global north being an extension of colonialism) as something that negates the fact that the game deals in some real fucking awful racial stereotypes
3 or 4 things of direct interest to our newsletter dropped almost immediately upon sending so itβs just one of those weeks I guess. hereβs me and @thesaintoftous.bsky.social on some trailers and my fave MARATHON vendor: buttondown.com/reframe/arch...
is that DJ Crazy Times
anyway, guess weβll see how this goes with Watanabe and the One Piece people involved but I cannot help but think of the last time people assumed that his interest in cinematic visual language and somewhat realistic movement meant an easy translation to live action (Netflix Cowboy Bebop)
live action Samurai Champloo already exists and itβs called GHOST DOG
wishing you all the best and a speedy recovery Helen!
really sorry to hear this Matt - hope you land on your feet
THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!

Oscars animated shorts! or rather, some standouts from this year which didnβt make the cut. (mostly) curated by wonderful guest contributor @woahitsjuanito.bsky.social! buttondown.com/reframe/arch...
shout outs to juan for helping out with today's re:frame send!

biggest thanks to @kambole.bsky.social @thesaintoftous.bsky.social @rollinbishop.com for letting me hop in here and write about some of my favorite shorts of last year (most of which are linked to in the newsletter!) while also trying to coax people into watching hundred year old shorts too π
the hottest oscars discourse comes from me and kambole this friday afternoon, writing about a bunch of animated shorts that were eligible but, heartbreakingly, did not score nominations this year.

Iwao Takamoto was one of the Disney greats. Films like Sleeping Beauty owe a lot to his meticulous lines.
The studio was a kind of home for him -- it was a big change. Just before, he'd been in the camps. We explore the story:

lastly: an obligatory plug of my animation newsletter: buttondown.com/reframe
adding one more thing because I keep seeing people saying this: they did not make this whole short with cel animation! they made some as reference which they then made digitally. itβs a hybrid process! mix of analogue and digital layered on top of each other until itβs indistinguishable
itβs not! they mirrored the look of cels through digital, they only made a couple of cels but itβs still remarkable that they did.
thank you!!
everything they told me about this project was so cool β as well as the actual book they used, they even showed me a real cel of animation which they made for reference!
